What is the
Ark ?
The Ark is a direct access emergency hostel for homeless
people. Many of these people have other problems such as
drugs, drink, or mental health.
What do we do
?
We offer a bed,
facilities to wash clothes and shower, and 3 meals a day,
in a supportive atmosphere 365 days a year.
Why do we do
it ?
The Ark has a Christian
foundation and seeks to serve God by helping those who
are in need.
Where are we ?
In Sandford Street, near
Hamilton Square, Birkenhead. Adjacent to the Council pay
& display car park.
When did we
start ?
We opened our first
shelter in January 1992 in an unused church. For 6 years
we were winter opening only.
How do we
staff our service ?
We have 90 volunteers who work shifts, e.g. working in
the kitchen for 3 hours on one evening per week. A
trained paid co-ordinator is on duty 24 hours a day.
What
additional services do we provide ?
We employ a housing officer who seeks permanent housing
and assists residents to make the move to independant
living. We have excellent links with drug and alcohol
agencies. Nursing staff provide a regular surgery. We
have links with providers of training services.
How are we
financed ?
Sources of income are housing benefit,donations from
individuals, schools, churches, companies, and charities.
