Elizabeth Stride

"Long Liz" as she was known to her friends was found dead at 1 o'clock in the morning of 30th September 1888. She was part one of the Ripper's "Double Event". Another body, that of Catharine Eddowes (victim 4) was found on the same morning only three quarters of an hour later.

Long Liz's body was found in a yard, just at the end of a dark passage just off Berner Street. Elizabeth's body was examined by Dr Blackwell at 1.16am. He found parts of her body were still warm and concluded that she had been dead between 20 and 30 minutes. Experts claim that Elizabeth had not been mutilated as badly as the other victims. This would suggest that the murderer had been interrupted by the man who found Stride's body.

The site of her murder is to the left of the large brick building at the right in the above picture.

The entry to the yard where
Stride was murdered is marked
by the cartwheel.
