Complicated plot demands complicated set at Highbury Little Theatre

Communicating Doors by Alan Ayckbourn

Brian Hill, a long standing member of Highbury Little Theatre and former Arts Director, has created a multi-roomed stage setting for the Alan Ayckbourn play ‘communicating Doors’ opening on 29th January running until 9th February.

Brian, a skilled set designer, has designed many sets over the years, and this one, which includes a balcony and many doors, (one which is the revolving ‘Communicating door’ through which the characters unknowingly go back or forward in time) and also uses lighting and a revolving stage, was a challenge. The ‘time warp’ also means that four out of the six actors have to play two ages, with costume and make up changes as well.

Director June Mellor, is delighted with Brian’s design. She says that Alan Ayckbourn, a craftsman playwright, writes complicated plots. This one needs a complicated set, and Brian’s design does the play justice.

June who is also Chairperson/actor/director at the Grange Playhouse in Walsall, insists that although the play is very funny, involving many doors, it is not a farce. Ayckbourn’s plays always have a serious underlying theme. This one being ‘ can we change our destiny?
