I spent almost 20 years in the IBM mainframe world, starting as a computer operator and quickly moving into systems programming. As a systems programmer, I installed and maintained most system software, diagnosed problems, installed fixes, programmed extensively in mainframe assembler and other languages, and supported and assisted users. In April 1995 I went to Thailand to work on a computerisation project for the Thai Revenue Department. I started in the testing department, designing and implementing a test system (a "mini replica" of the nation-wide network), developing test plans, and testing application software. Subsequently I was involved in software distribution over the network. Working on the tax project gave me valuable experience in Unix and TCP/IP. In August 1997 the tax project finished so I joined a local (Bangkok) company developing software for the Internet. This was a useful opportunity to learn much about writing web pages, CGI programming (Perl), JavaScript and Java. Then I worked as R & D Director for a small computer services company in Penang, Malaysia. This involved recommending computing solutions for customers, extensive use of VBA in Microsoft Access and some C++. On my return to the UK in 1999 I worked for Docuplus, developing an internal system based on Microsoft Outlook and Access that is still vital to the business today. My current position is with LASERCOM, a supplier of integration, document composition and Internet software and services to many major European companies. In this position I have extended my C++, Java and Internet skills. |
