Her Birth certificate gives her date of birth as 4 March 1839, with the place as St Pauls. Her father was James Ashby, cordwainer. Her mother was given as Mary Ashby, formerly Nott. mary registered her daughter's birth on 4 April, in the East Wyner sub-district of Norwich Registration District.
