[451] 1849: John was born in Stokesay, Shropshire, the son of Samuel Chester and
Emma (nee Powell). He was born at Wettleton Gate Cottage according to the
Parish Registers, where his father was a blacksmith. He was baptised on 23
December 1849, on the same day his parents were married!

[452] 1851: In the census for that year, John was the only child of his parents,
who were living in Wettleton, near Stokesay. His father was a blacksmith.

[453] 1861: In the census for that year, John was aged 11, the eldest of a growing family,
consisting of 3 sisters and a brother, Samuel. Their address was given as
Wettleton Common. His father was a labourer according to the census.

[454] 1871: In the census for that year, John was still unmarried, living at home
in a large household of his younger brothers and sisters together with three
boarders and visitors. By this time, his father was a Coal Merchant, while
John was a Shoemaker.

[455] 1879: John married Sarah Morris on 5 November. According to the parish Register,
John Chester was of full age, batchelor, shoemaker, residing in Wettleton.
His father was Samuel Chester, a farmer[!].
Sarah Morris was of full age, spinster, living at Rowton. her father was
John Morris, a labourer.
Both signed the register, and the witnesses were Alfred Chester and
Stuan [!?!] Morris.

[456] 1881: John and Sarah's daughter Beatrice was baptised in Stokesay Parish
Church on 30 January. They were living at Stokewood, and John was a
shoemaker.

[465] 1937: John died on 24 July, aged 87. He is buried in Stokesay Churchyard.
The inscription reads (according to the transcript in Shropshire Record Office):-
"John CHESTER died 24 July 1937, aged 87 and Sarah his wife
died 31 Jan 1942 aged 81"
There is a sketchmap in Workbook 1 Page 140 showing the location of the grave.
The adjacent plot (again from the transcription in Shropshire RO) has
simply "Jack & Kate Chester". The grave was visited in September 1998 by Andrew
and Barbara Wager.

John's will was made on 17 June 1922 by Richard Marston, a Ludlow
solicitor. There is a copy in the file. John was 'of Wettleton Hill, Craven
Arms', and he was a Coal Salesman.
He appointed his wife Sarah and his daughter Beatrice to be his
Executrixes.
He left all his furniture and indoor and outdoor effects to his wife
absolutely.
The residue was left to his executrixes to convert it to money, invest it
and pay the income to his wife Sarah for her lifetime. After her death, it
was to be divided among all his children, equally.
Probate was granted at London on 3 September 1937 to Beatrice Evans (wife
of David Evans). Effects �281:0s:11d.
