Horwich Moor Methodist Church

Old Lane,

BOLTON

BL6 6QL

Our church, situated on Old Lane and known familiarly as Bottom o’th’Moor chapel, or ‘The Moor’, is beautifully kept and where else can you walk out of the church door at the end of a service and see a wonderful panorama that takes in Manchester and Liverpool. We are a small but loyal congregation and enjoy our faith. Because of the setting, our church is often used for Retreat Days and Quiet Days. We hope you will join us one Sunday afternoon and receive a typical Bottom o’th’Moor welcome. On 1 September 2008 St John’s Methodist Church and Horwich Moor formed a close partnership as together the two churches became Horwich Methodist Mission.

Church History

"Tucked away in a fold of the hill below the crest of the moor, snugly shielded from the biting winds of winter, but admirably situated to receive the full glow of summer rests a little stone building which to successive generations has been a second home….their chapel"

That was the description of Horwich Moor Methodist Church that appeared in the Horwich Journal on April 11th 1969 at the time of the church’s centenary. It was built on its present site as the land price then was three old pence a square yard, whereas further down the hill it was three and a half old pence! But Methodism in the area is older than that. The Sunday School began in 1834 and was held in the upper room of a nearby cottage.
