CHAMPIONS OF WALESTHE DREAM CONTINUES
![]()
City, with largely an unchanged squad, began the 1994-95 campaign where they’d left off the previous season. Undefeated in their first seven league outings, they soon established a commanding presence at the top of the league, where they remained for the rest of the season. On October 1st, their eighth league game of the season, City suffered a shock home defeat at the hands of an impressive Afan Lido, who eventually finished the season as well-deserved runners-up. Lido scored 3 goals in as many minutes in a blistering first half performance, and City spent the rest of the match playing catch-up. City goals came from Frank Mottram and Steve Buxton, but with the help of the woodwork on numerous occasions, Lido held on in what was one of the most exciting games ever seen at Farrar Road. It was to be the last time that City lost at home all season. Over the next 30 league games, only 3 more were lost – all away. City had the Championship title more or less sown up by March, and by the end of the season had won by 9 clear points.
Their dominance of the league was shown in a final goal difference of +70, 36 better than their nearest rivals, third-placed Ton Pentre, with fifty of City’s league goals coming from the lethal partnership of Frank Mottram and Marc Lloyd-Williams. Amongst an array of devastating performances during the 1994-95 season were a 5-0 victory over Caersws, a 6-3 victory over Flint Town United, a 7-2 victory over Aberystwyth and an 8-0 victory over Connah’s Quay. The most unfortunate of City’s victims were undoubtedly Maesteg Park Athletic who, after being thrashed 7-0 by City in the league in November, were then beaten 12-1 a month later in the Welsh Cup!
On a final note, former Everton midfielder and fans favourite Kevin Langley created history in becoming the first player ever to win league championship medals in both England and Wales.
