FEEDING
|
|
For me feeding has to be the fun part. With such
a varied diet possible the options at feeding times are almost
endless. To begin with, the core of your chipmunks diet should
consist of a chipmunk mix. This can be brought at most pet stores
and will typically include nuts, flakes, sunflower seeds, corn
and a range of small chewy food suited for chipmunks. This mixes
are very useful to ensure your chipmunk gets most of the required
nutrients, however it should be mentioned that chipmunks have a
bit of a sweetooth for the nuts and sunflowers in these mixes and
will often eat these first hoping you will give in and give them
more. This should not be done as your chipmunk will quickly
become fat!!!
Around 25-30g of this chipmunk mix should be given each day per
chipmunk, but often they like to store some, espeacially in
autumn as they prepare for hibernation. This often leads to the
housing being filled with food.
Apart from the core mix your chipmunks diet should be
supplemented to give protein and ensure general well being. To do
this fresh fruit and vegtables should be given such as grapes,
apples, pears, bananas, carrots and so on. Apart from giving
protein, they also are essential for health and prevention of
diseases and constipation. Giving your chipmunk walnuts and other
hard shelled nuts such as hazel, acorns and almonds will do it
good as this will help keep its teeth trimmed.
Top Tip: As a treat try giving your chipmunk some toast.
