HEALTH

Chipmunks are a tough and sturdy creature which, if looked after corectly, should remain healthly. Problems usually arrive through poor management. Below are listed some of the most commonest ailments but if unsure it is always advisable to see your veterinary surgeon.
Overgrown incisors As chipmunks are part of the rodent family their teeth will continue to grow throughout its life. However due to the gnawing of wood and other hard materials they are usually kept short. Occasionly the teeth become too long due to the lack of this gnawing action. In this case the vet may have to file or clip the teeth, and in future it should be ensured that harder materials such as dog biscuits or nuts with hard shells are added to the diet.
Constipation This is when there is a blockage in the intestines. Often caused by chipmunks eating their own bedding, it should be checked that unsuitable bedding such as wood waste or cotten wool are replaced. Also give fresh fruit such as oranges to help. If problem persists then consult a vet.
Diarrhoea The opposite to constipation, this can be indentified by very loose and runny faeces. Usually caused by too many fresh fruit and vegtables. To counter this, adjust diet by adding kaolin or cornflourto the dried food. If problem lasts for more than a few days go to vet as chipmunks can dehydrate very quickly.
Scratches and Wounds Most scratches and wounds are caused by the chipmunk catching itself on a rough piece of wood or metal, or by fighting. A chipmunks skin can heal very quickly so minor wounds can be left untreated or just bathed in a mild antiseptic lotion once a day. Deep or infected wounds should be seen by a vet.
Respiratory system Did you know chipmunks take an average of 75 breaths a minute. If infected it will normally speed up then subside to slower more laboured breaths. The chipmunk could be suffering from a disease called Aspergilosis caused from damp or mouldy hay. The lungs may have been irritated too by smoke, aerosoles, and so on. Ask your vet for treatment.
It is also worth noting that chipmunks can catch 'colds' from humans so try to avoid being around your chipmunk if you are suffering from a cold. Also try to ensure the cage is out of reach of draughts to avoid giving chipmunk a chill.
