Writing

The Ben is mightier than the sword

The present letter is a very long one, simply because I had no leisure to make it shorter.
Blaise Pascal

Academic publications

Part of the title of one of my papers My first career was as an academic scientist, doing research in human vision. I published work on the perception of size (and its link to the statistics of natural images), colour vision, the statistics of vision research procedures, umpires' LBW decisions in cricket, and the statistics of a clinical test of colour vision.
See my list of academic publications.

Sundry articles

  • Article about the science of cricket in the Daily Record
  • Article in the British Interactive Group newsletter (with Priscilla Heard and Prof. Richard Gregory)
  • Item in published compilation of The Last Word, the question-and-answer column of New Scientist
  • Article about my research into the visual abilities of cricket umpires, in How's That - Journal of the Association of Cricket Umpires and Scorers
  • 3 letters in New Scientist

Information boards

One of the information boards As a volunteer, I co-wrote 4 outdoor information boards for Alva Glen Heritage Trust. The graphic design was done by Art is an Option of Alloa. I did most of the writing on two of the boards, one of which is on the right.
See the other board in detail here.
