At last we were able to detect on our favourite 'fair site', even though conditions
weren't ideal - muddy and lumpy and stubbly. Despite this, we were able to
rescue nice lumps of lead and pewter buttons by the score! And in between
those signals were a couple of interesting items, such as the copper alloy seal
matrix shown here.
Under the mud, I could have sworn this
little item was a lead soldier with machine
gun. But a find by our latest recruit turned
out to be a heavily gilded copper alloy
late mediaeval monk and his pet cat,
which could be either a pilgrim's badge
or possibly a decorative mount from a
box.
I just love the moggy!
MEDIAEVAL SEAL MATRIX C1350.
My second decent signal turned
up this seal. I have filled the
recesses with salt to show the
design more clearly. Apologies
for the imprint, but will upload a
better one shortly.
Funny little owl-type decoration and
decorated strap end from the same
period, it seems.
Henry VII (1485-1509)
Sovereign type penny,
Bishop Fox issue.
Two bag seals - slightly
more fun than your average
lead find! The small one
has a shield on it..
Two small hammered coins:
Charles I penny and probably
a Henry VI halfpenny, London
mint.
A rather knackered
Krauwinkel (probably
Hans) Jetton 16th
century.
