| It lives! |
Today was one of the best days of my life, one of those defining moments where things change. What was it that made this momentous difference in my life? Well to put it simply, my car is alive. Ok so it's not finished, in fact it is just the rolling chassis, but at 4 PM on the 30th May 1997 my Fury rolled out of the garage on it's maiden trip. As trips go, it was not the longest journey ever made, but it was very special to me.
It was the end of a long day indeed. It started with a blind panic to get the brake
lines run, and the brake pressure switch installed.
With a
lot of BF and BI, they are all now in place. One of the lines has a snake section in it to
use up the slack, so I might fix it shortly, but not today. The front end was one of the
best parts so far. I was able to take the uprights, disks and other bits, clean them and
get them put together in about an hour. I have decided that if I every have to work on
parts of the car I'll remove them and then put them back later. It has made things so
simple to be able to do them on a bench.
The next problem of the day was wheels. I have decided to get some minilight replicas
with Yokohama tyres, but these will take about 3 weeks, I need them in 3 hours. Off to the
lovely car breakers, to get 4 old wheels.
Nowhere
has any Mk II Escort wheels, so I have to get some a Mk III. They are about the same size,
have the correct stud pattern, but not the right spacing. As a result they rub on the
front calipers, or rather they did until I used a number of washers to pad them out!
Finally the petrol tank was fitted, and all the bolt's tightened up.
With some help from Brian, the car was dropped to it's wheels
and rolled out of the garage onto the front lawn. Marvelous.
I cannot describe how proud I felt when people stopped to look at it, and the first sit
it in will be memory to take to my grave.
