Report, Results or PicturesAn overcast sky greeted bowlers to Bungay Bowls Club last Sunday to compete for the Atlantic Country Superstore Triples Shield. Now in their third year of sponsorship the Earsham-based supplier of fencing, building and agricultural supplies attracted thirty triples on another crowded weekend of bowling activities. Divided into four groups, each triple would play three matches with the group winners going through to the semi-finals.
First to reach the semi-finals was the last minute stand-in triple of Geoff Sherwood of Halewsworth, playing wuith Bungay's , Roy Davey and Arthur Plummer. A two shot win over the Thurlton triple of Keith and Sue Long, playing with Barry Rivett, ensured Geoff's triple was the only unbeaten triple in their group.
Their semi-final opponents turned out to be Bungay's Richard Brinded and Ann Swanston, playing with Beccles Caxton's Eric Trudgill. A healthy shot difference of twenty-three shots meant they finished ten shots clear of the Loddon Swan triple of Rita Winterton, Ken Coles and Mark Coles, despite losing their last game 11-5.
The Lowestoft Railway and Blundeston triple of Molly and Doug Rushmere playing with EBA Over-55's triples champion Brenda Hubble gained three narrow wins to remain the only unbeaten triple in their group to clinch the third semi-final place.
The fourth semi-final place came from the closest group finish. Bungay's Cyril and Margaret Moore, playing with Brampton's Dennis Francis edged out the Hales Garden House triple of Trevor Squire, Joy Squire and David Rayner to head the group by four shots after both triples had won all three of their qualifying matches.
As the weather had improved during the day more spectators were encouraged to stay and watch the finals. After a slow start Richard Brinded's triple finally took an 8-5 lead on the seventh of the ten-end semi-final. Three shots on the next two ends allowed them to drop two shots on the final end to secure a win over Geoff Sherwood's triple. In the other semi-final Cyril Moore's triple was facing defeat with just his last wood to play. However, a running wood at the head saw Cyril intentional move the jack to the back of the head to secure two shots and force Molly Rushmere's triple to play the extra end. With Doug Rushmere's wood holding shot Cyril was once again facing defeat as he bowled his final wood. Which, as on the previous end, ran into the head and pushed the jack back to give his triple three shots. Molly was unable to retrieve the situation with her last wood so ended up in the third place final.
In another close match for third place Geoff Sherwood's triple scored a four on the eighth end to lead 8-4 and out scored Molly's triple 2-1 over the final two ends to claim third place by ten shots to five.
The final started particularly well for Cyril's triple as they scored two two's, a four and a five in the first five ends to lead Richard's triple 13-1 at the halfway point. From then on they simply controlled the match to take the Atlantic Country Superstores Triple Shield by sixteen shots to eight.
George Brockford of Atlantic presented the finalists with their prizes and trophies.
