Glorious sunshine welcomed ninety bowlers to Bungay Bowls on the last Sunday of July to compete for the Atlantic Country Superstore Triples Shield.

In the first of four qualifying groups to decide the semi-finalist two triples remained undefeated after two of their three qualifying matches. However, both Cyril Moore (Bungay), playing with Margaret Moore (Bungay) and Brian Chaston, and Halesworth’s Joan Jordan playing with Alburgh’s Evelyyn Rapier and Ray Mann proceed to lose their last match, but as Cyril’s triple had a superior shot’s difference they claimed the first semi-final place.

Group B provided a nail biting finish as three triples pursued the semi-final place. Les and Barbara Capon (Hales) playing with Tracey Topple (Beccles) only won two of the ten ends to lose 14-3 and miss their chance of first place. Stan Dossett (Bungay) playing with Lowestoft Railway’s Russell Garrod and John Ward were 4-3 ahead at the halfway stage , but then lost 11-5. John Knights (Aldeby) playing with George and Pat Mulcairn (Mettingham) were never ahead in their final game and despite losing six of the ten ends salvaged a draw on the final end to top the group by one point.

In Group C the high scoring Bungay triple of Roger Bullen, Derek Hinsley and Reg Brinded scored a rare full house of nine shots in their second match and then overcame their only group rivals Trevor and Maureen Wright playing with John Hogwood of Caxton Bowls Club 15-3 to book the third semi-final place.

In the final qualifying group Martlesham’s Peter and Betty Harrington, playing with Terry Wilkins, comfortable won all three matches to gain the last semi-final place.

In the first semi-final Cyril Moore’s triple were two shots ahead with two ends to play when John Knights drew the jack to the back of the head to gain five shots on the ninth end. By restricting Cyril’s triple to a single on the last end John, George and Pat secured their place in the final. In the other semi-final Roger Bullen’s triple looked to be heading for a comfortable victory over Peter Harrington’s triple as they led 13-5 with just three ends to play. A five and a two on the next two ends for Peter’s triple meant they were one behind with one end to play. However, Roger’s triple gained two shots for a match win.

With both leads, Reg Brinded and Pat Mulcairn, having an outstanding game, Derek Hinsley’s controlled drawing woods, enabled Roger’s triple to take a 9-1 lead with just three ends to play. But just as in the semi-finals Roger’s triple dropped a five and a two in the eighth and ninth ends to lead by just one shot with one end to play. Once again they held their nerve to gain three shots and win the Atlantic Country Superstore Triples shield for the first time. Atlantic’s Louise Clitheroe presented the prizes and trophies to the finalists.
