Played at Bungay Bowls Club on Sunday 18th August 2002

Report, Results or PicturesThe glorious sunshine that greeted bowlers to Bungay Bowls Club last Sunday was not to last as the Club’s final tournament of the season was washed out, but not before some excellent bowls had been played.
Long time supporter Ron Davey made a welcome return to the club as his Beccles based timber sheds, workshops and summerhouses venture sponsored the mixed fours tournament.
The first of just two qualifying groups saw three teams fighting for top spot as they were the only teams to have won their open two matches. However, the all-Bungay four of Peter and April Nunn, Ruby and David Fairhead crashed to a 14-7 defeat in their final game to lose their chance of a finals place. Group leaders by a shot difference of twelve were Trevor Squire, Joy Squire, Arthur Squire and David Rayner from Hales. They struggled in their last match, but managed a single shot win on the last end despite Trevor giving up his last wood to finish with a shot difference of 28. Their group rivals were the Bungay based four of Tony McGhee, Derek Hinsley, Barbara Plaisted and Reg Brinded. They raced to a 16-4 lead and a shot difference of 27 with one end to play. Holding a group winning two shots they watched as opposing ship John Hogwood (Beccles Caxton) played the perfect last end, last wood by knocking both shot woods out of the head and giving his team two shots to deny Tony’s four a place in the main final.
The second qualifying group also provided a thrilling finish. By beating the group leaders 15-5 in their last match the four of Tony Stapleton (Beccles Conservatives), Peter Sims (Brampton), Dinah Gaze (Thurlton) and Stan Dossett (Bungay) gave themselves the consolation of at least a third place final if the Wrentham/Bungay based four of Roger Clarke, Hazel Catlin, Mick Leech and Roy Davey failed to win their last match. This looked most likely until Mick, playing at number three, drew his two woods for shot on the final end. A further shot from skip Roy Davey gave his four the three shot win and a place in the final.
The finals eventually started after a pause for a rain storm, but after just one end the heavens opened up again and the heavy downpour flooded the green. With daylight fading and no sign of the green becoming payable again that evening the organisers and players reluctantly abandoned the finals. The very understanding Ron and Gwen Davey present the shared prizes to the rather disappointed finalists.
Finals abandoned due to waterlogged green.
