Report, Results or PicturesLast Sunday Bungay Bowls Club held it third open tournament of the season. Organiser Ian Gosling had gathered 24 teams of triples to contest the Chairman’s Shield which was once again sponsored by the Harleston builder Graham Johnson.
After two of the three qualifying matches in the first of two qualifying groups’ three triples had won both their opening matches. The Blundeston triple of Peter Hurren, Ralf Kippen and Kim Dyer led the group by six shots going into their final game but lost a closely fought contest 8-6. This meant that a place in the final was going to go to the match that featured the other two triples with 100% records. The Diss Causeway triple of John Garnam, Jim and Janet Bromley scored two singles on the last two ends to beat the Bungay trio of Richard Allen, Richard Tuthill and Barbara Wortley to take the Grand final place. With two of the top three triples losing the trio of Alfie Broughton (Bungay), Dick Clarke (Wenhaston) and Eddie Gaffney (Wortwell) snatched a place in the third place final by drawing their first game and winning the next two.
The second qualifying group also featured a trio of triples going into their last game with 100% records. In this group however all three won their final games so shot difference became crucial. By winning their last game 24-0 the Lowestoft Railway triple of Jim Palmer, Sue and Peter Woodgate held on to top spot by a comfortable 39 shots. The unlucky triple that lost out included two of their team mates, Russell Garrod and John Ward who were playing with Kessingland’s Peter Burch. Though they had a shot difference of 21 they had scored one less shot than the Fressingfield trio of Morris Eldridge, Ruby George and June Hopper who also had a shot difference of 21 and were therefore heading to the third place final.
With the heat of day relenting the finals got underway. In the third place final Morris’ triple restricted Alfie’s triple to just two scoring ends in ten to win 14-5.
The final was also a one sided affair that went contrary to the form book. After their big win in the last match Jim Palmer’s triple could not hold off an impressive display of bowling from the Diss Causeway triple who romped to a 16-5 win within nine ends, despite Jim’s triple winning four of those ends. It was the first appearance in a Bungay tournament for John, Janet and Jim who walked off with the top prize and the Chairman’s Shield.
Bungay Chairman Dominic Belisario thanked all those people who had helped make the day a success and thanked Graham Johnson for his generous sponsorship of the day’s event.
