Sunny but blustery conditions, the latter of which wreaked havoc with the scoreboards, greeted thirty pairs of bowlers to Bungay Bowls Club to compete for the Captain’s Cup which was again sponsored by Bungay’s John Groom through his Catering and Carriages business.

After two of the three qualifying matches in the first group four pairs, split by a shot difference of eight shots, had won both their matches. The Browston pair of Dennis Pratt and Jim McDonald were leading the group by six shots, but lost their last match 15-4. Gary Marshall (Waveney), playing with Andy Anderson (Kensington Gardens), were lying second but narrowly lost their last match 12-10, leaving the way clear for the two remaining undefeated pairs to head for finals. The fourth place Bungay pair of Jim Reid and David Sheppard had a comfortable 17-7 win, but heading to the top would be the George Howes (Mettingham) and Peter Nunn (Bungay) pairing who won 18-5 and pipped Jim and David to a grand final place by five shots.

In the second qualifying group the three pairs that had won both their opening two matches were separated by just five shots. The 2006 winners, brother and sister Roger Bullen (Bungay) and Margaret Harman (Wroxham), who had won and drawn their opening matches were just behind. This pair had to beat the group leaders from Blundeston, Peter Hurren and Kim Dyer ,to stand a chance of getting a finals place. As they started the twelfth and final end of the match the scores were level, but Peter and Kim snatched the winning shot to win by one and now waited to see what their two remaining group rivals could achieve. Brian and Valerie Pryke (Trimley St Mary), who finished third last year, dropped four shots on the last two ends of their match to lose their winning record and drop from contention. The Costessy Crown duo of Steve Tayt and Jackie Lutkin were one down on the final end until Steve drew shot wood to gain a draw which was sufficient for second in group and a place in the third place final, while Peter and Kim headed for the grand final.

The warm sunny weather encouraged many players to stay on and watch the finals. In the match for third place Steve and Jackie were leading Jim and David 11-5 until a change of jack length enabled Jim and David to pick up six shots over the last three ends to force an extra end play off. With David bowling three excellent shot woods, Steve’s attempt to draw or run the jack narrowly failed thus giving Jim and David the win.

In the grand final George Howes and Peter Nunn started brightly and were five up after four of the ten ends. Peter Hurren and Kim Dyer then scored their first shoton the next end and immediately changed the length of the jack. They scored one on each of the next four ends to tie the game at 5-5 with one end to play. The final end was the highest scoring of the final as Peter and Kim gained three shots to win the Captain’s Cup in Peter’s second appearance in the final.

After thanking the players for taking part and the Bungay members who had helped with the organisation and running of the tournament throughout the day, Bungay Chairman Dominic Belisario handed over to tournament sponsor and Bungay Town Mayor John Groom who present the finalist with their prizes.
