Despite the lack of a title sponsor for the first in its history Bungay Bowls Club attracted twenty teams of triples to its first open tournament of the season, the President’s Shield 3-wood triples tournament. In the first of the two qualifying groups just two triples managed to win their opening two games. The Lowestoft Railway triple of Peter and Sue Woodgate, playing with Diane Spalding, were never behind during the tens end of their third and final qualifying match to win 10-7. The other unbeaten triple of Mark Cole (Kessingland), John Knights (Aldeby) and Tracey Topple (Hales) raced off to an 8-3 lead after six ends, but then had to manage just a three shot lead on the last end, which they succeeded in do by dropping just two shots. With Mark’s triple having a five shot better shot difference than Peter’s triple, Mark headed for the grand final, while Peter headed for the third place final.

The winner of the match between the Blundeston triple of Peter Hurren, Kim Dyer and Ralph Kippen and the Costessey/St Mark’s triple of Steve Tayt, Ray and Jackie Lutkin would mostly likely appear in the grand final as two of the three unbeaten triples in the second qualifying group met head to head. At the halfway point Peter’s triple were five shots ahead, but Steve’s triple fought back to 7-7 with one end to play. Holding one, Steve drew a second shot which Peter could not beat, thus giving Steve the required win. Which final they appeared in was now in the hands of the Bungay/Bungay/Shotford triple of Keith Everett, Tony Murphy and Ron Pine. They were also unbeaten, but trailed 8-3 with just three ends to play. However, they scored eight shots in the last three ends to win the game, but due to an inferior shot difference of seven they would be playing in the third place final, while Steve’s triple would appear in the grand final.

After six of ten ends in the third place final, Keith’s triple were once again losing, this time by seven shots to one to Peter Woodgate’s triple. Another recovery effort saw Keith, Tony and Ron going into the last end tied at seven all. Tony made two shots with his leading woods, before Diane drew shot for Peter, before Peter unfortunately took that shot out with his first wood. With his second he moved the jack back, but only closer to an opponent’s wood which was the way it stayed for the remainder of the end giving Keith’s triple third place.

In the grand final Mark Cole’s triple had a healthy 8-4 lead with two ends to play, before losing a three. With just the skips to bowl on the final end Mark held two shots until Steve promoted one of his team’s woods to cut the count down to one. However, he could not find the counting wood so Mark, John and Tracey won the President’s Shield by nine shots to seven. This was John’s fourth victory in the tournament since 1996.

Chairman Dominic Belisario thanked all those that had supported the event and those who had helped organise it and provide refreshments on the day. Fittingly Club President Frank Honeywood presented the prizes to the winners.
