Important Events in the History of Bungay Bowls Club

1875
Earliest evidence (so far) of the existence of a bowling green in Bungay. Kelly's 1875 Directory of Bungay states that there was a bowling green associated with the White Lion Pub. [Thanks to Frank Honeywood.]

1886
A bowl in the possession of Ken Palmer Bowl has the following inscription.
Prize Bowls presented by Capt. F. Smith, Bungay Bowling Green and Won by H. Woolnough Augt 1886.

1898
First pictorial evidence of the White Lion Bowls Club.

1915
Bill Mongahan's
1915 postcard from Bungay shows members of the White Lion Bowls club posing on the green outside the castle.

1920
The Green by the castle was vacated and the tennis courts on Honeypot Meadow was obtained.
Affiliated with the Chaucer Institute, but Bungay Bowling Club identity retained.

1922
Club moved to present site. Corner of St. John's Road and Bardolph Road.

1924
Application to join the Suffolk County Bowling Association accepted in May.
First set of Rules and Bye-laws adopted.
Formation of Ladies Section within the Club.

1925
New Pavilion officially open on May 13th. Original estimate was £54 - 12 Shillings but final figure was £64 - 17 Shillings.
Membership of 85.

1933
Winners of Suffolk Junior Cup.

1934
Green floodlighting installed at a rent of £2 - 5 Shillings per quarter.

1936
Bungay and District team beat the Suffolk County Executive team by 52 shots at Bungay.

1937
The return match of the above fixture at Haven Hotel Green, Ipswich. Bungay won by 3 shots.

1947
Mr Les Bayfield elected Club Treasurer.

1948
Joined the Beccles and District Bowls League.
Winners of Suffolk Senior Cup.
R. Morris, E.Tuck and C. Cook win Suffolk EBF County Blocks (triples) Cup.
Ladies win Suffolk EBA Rinks (fours) Cup.

1949
Winners of Suffolk Senior Cup for second time.

1952
E. Gardiner, W.Barber and W. Lincoln win Suffolk EBF Blocks Cup.

1954
Winners of Beccles and District League. First time in the League's history that the cup leaves Beccles.

1956
Green and travel fees increased to 2 shillings and 4 pence while Subscriptions rose to 25 Shillings.

1956
First prize in target bowls competition was a £1 voucher.

1958
W. Barber wins Suffolk County EBF Mens Singles title.

1959
Ladies section registered for league and county matches.

1961
Introduction of blazer badge.
Loss of 5 Shillings and 10 pence on Annual Dinner.

1964
Ladies allowed to play on Mens green on Monday's and Friday's only.

1966
Ladies allowed to become full members of the Club.

1967
New front gate made by Mr Albert Rumsby.
Pavillion roof and guttering repaired.

1970
Laying of new green. Club forced to play all matches on tennis courts behind the present green.

1971
Due to the unavailability of new green the Club played all matches on Maltings Meadows.

1972
Opening of new green.

1973
Entered Bungay Friendly Bowls League.

1974
Newly formed Waveney District Council takes over maintenance of the green.

1976
Joined English Bowling Association and played in EBA leagues.

1977
Mr Les Bayfield resigns as Treasurer after 31 years. Duly made a life member.

1978
Bungay beat Suffolk County EBF Executive in first such game on the new Green.
Glass windows replaced wooden shutters on the pavilion. A sink was also installed.

1979
Reached quarter finals of EBF Senior Cup.

1980
Joined the Halesworth 3-wood League.
Suffolk County EBF President Day held at green.
Club's first Open Tournament. Sponsored by the Bungay branch of the TSB Bank attracted 55 entrants to a Singles competition.

1981
Fund raising "50" Club started. Organised by Mr Harry James.
Staged Suffolk County EBF Area A semi-finals and finals. This was the first time the Club had been honoured in such a way.

1984
Staged Suffolk County EBF finals for the first time.

1985
Bungay win Halesworth Three Wood League for the first time since the revival of the league in 1979

1986
Staged the Club's first Ladies-only Open Tournament. The event was sponsored by Mr & Mrs Mick Broughton.
Bungay win Halesworth Three Wood League.

1987
Joined the Benacre and District Bowls League.
Tom Honeywood wins Suffolk County EBF Under-25s Singles competition.
Club enters a second team in Lowestoft and Area EBA League.

1988
Benacre League team beats Kessingland at Wrentham by 50 shots to win the Easey Cup.

1989
Old pavilion demolished. New pavilion open by Waveney District Council Chairperson Mrs Pointen at a special opening event at which the Club entertained many special guests.
Mike Patrick, Ian Gosling, Cyril Moore and Mick Broughton reached the quarter-finals of the EBA English National finals at Worthing. First Bungay players to achieve this feat.

1990
Brian Pigney, Cyril Moore and Derek Hinsley win the Suffolk County EBA Triples at Framglingham and also appear in the EBA National Finals at Worthing.
Mens Unbadged EBA team narrowly beat Christchurch at Framlingham to win the Suffolk EBA Unbadged Fours competition.
Benacre League team wins Easey Cup for second time.
Bungay win Halesworth Three Wood League.
Tom Honeywood selected as reserve for Suffolk County EBF Adams team.
Ladies appliction to join the Suffolk County Ladies EBA accepted.

1991
Bungay win Halesworth Three Wood League.
Paul Gosling selected for Suffolk County EBF Under-25s team.
Ladies EBA team wins Recorder Cup League.
Club goes on first ever tour to Swanspool in Northamptonshire.

1992
Bungay win Halesworth Three Wood League.

1993
The Club and Bungay were honoured with staging the Suffolk County EBF Adams teams games for three years.
Bungay win Halesworth Three Wood League for fourth successive year.

1995
Cyril Moore and Derek Hinsley reached the Suffolk County EBA Pairs final and appear in the EBA National Finals at Worthing.
Vell Beardsley reached the Ladies EBA National singles final at Leamington Spa. First Bungay lady to achieve this feat.
Club Vice-President Mrs Hilda Snelling celebrates her 90th birthday.

1996
Vell Beardsley reaches Ladies EBA National finals again.

1997
Benacre League team wins Easey Cup for third time.
Bungay win Halesworth Three Wood League.
Maureen Short and daughter June White reach Ladies EBA National finals.
Work commences to replace banking and install an automatic watering system.

1998
Centenary season celebrated with tournament for Club Members sponsored by Parravani's Ice Cream who were also celebrating their Centenary.
Automatic watering system completed, though it wasn't used very much due to a wet season.
Wooden banking, topped off with slabs built.
Club takes over maintenance of the Green from Waveney District Council.
Both EBA Mens teams win their section of the EBA Lowestoft Area League. This is the second time that both Bungay teams have won their sections. The A team beats the B team in the Albert Cup Final.
Benacre A League team wins Easey Cup for fourth time.
Bungay win Halesworth Three Wood League.
Club B team reaches finals of EBF Area A Benevolent Cup where they are beaten by Blundeston.
Automatic sprinkler installed in centre of the Green.

1999
Block wall built to replace unsafe vertical slabs at northern end of Green. Club car park and rear entrance re-profiled. Trees removed from western side of Green and replaced with wire fencing.
Jack Jermy reaches Mens EBA Champion of Champions Singles National finals at Worthing.
Club wins Halesworth Three Wood League but are runner's up in both Mens EBA Sections - the B team by one point, and are runners-up in the Lowestoft Area EBA Four competition. The Benacre A team lose to eventual winners Halesworth A, in the semi-finals of the Easey Cup.

2000
Bungay beat Hales Garden House 79-65 in the final of the Area A Humphrey Benevolent Cup to win the cup for the first time in their history.
Bungay win Halesworth Three Wood League for the fourth successive year and tenth time in their history.
Bungay lost to Norbridge 82-68 in the final of the East Anglian Daily Times Charity Shield.
Lost to Thorndon (94-58) in the Suffolk EBF Senior Cup Semi-finals at Leiston. The furthest they have been in the Senior Cup since 1949.
A grant from Bungay Town Trust enabled the Club to build 4 seats which overlook the green for members of the public.
Work commences on uplifting the edges of the green.

2001
Bungay Suffolk EBA Lowestoft Area Fours Knockout Cup for the first time by beating Halesworth 86-72 at Bungay.
Bungay win Halesworth 3-Wood League for a fifth successive time.
Terry White wins Suffolk EBA Lowestoft Area Singles Final, but loses in County Quarter Finals.
Bungay lost by 2 shots to Debenham in the quarterfinals of the Suffolk EBA Bert Edwards cup at Eye.
Club hosts Suffolk EBF Area A semi-finals and finals. After a dry start the remaining semi-finals were transferred to Sole Bay due to heavy rain and flooding of the Bungay green. Players return the next day to complete their matches.
Bungay beat Halesworth 86-72 at Bungay to win the Lowestoft Area EBA Fours Knockout Cup for the first time.
Bungay B win promotion to the Division One of the Mens Lowestoft EBA League.

2002
Bungay A win the Halesworth League for a sixth successive time. They won all ten matches.
Bungay B win promotion to Division One of the Halesworth League.
The Benacre A team lose to Halesworth A in the final of the Easey Cup at Sole Bay.
Bungay lost to Kessingland in the Area Final of the Suffolk Senior Cup.
Bungay reached the semi-finals of the Area Humphrey Benevolent Cup.
Derek Hinsley, Roger Bullen, George Mulcairn and Cyril Moore reached the Suffolk Mens EBA Fours quarter finals.
Margaret Moore (Singles) and Barbara Wortley (Champion of Champions) reached the EBF Area A Semi-finals that were played at Halesworth.
Richard Brinded reached the Four Wood Singles Area semi-finals held at Kessingland.
Ron Davey returns to sponsor the Mixed Fours Tournament. The first time that a tournament is run to this format at Bungay. Unfortunately the final is rained off.

2003
Peter Nunn's Beccles A team finished runners-up in the Beccles League Second Division and have gained promotion to Division One.
Derek Hinsley and Cyril Moore lost in the Suffolk EBA Men's Pairs Semi-Finals.
Derek Hinsley, Cyril Moore, Roger Clarke and Roger Bullen lost in the Suffolk EBA Men's Fours Quarter Finals
Margaret Moore lost in the Suffolk EBF Women's Area Semi-finals in the Champion of Champions, Senior Singles and Singles competitions.
Richard Brinded lost to Jimmy Summons (Kessingland) in the Champion of Champion Area A semi-finals.
The club hosted the Suffolk EBF Men's Area semi-finals and finals day for the 2003 season on 19th and 20th July.
Richard and Reg Brinded reached the Section semi-finals of the Suffolk Men's EBA Pairs.

2004
Club Secretary Ian Gosling wins the Beccles and Bungay Journal's Bezant Cup for the second time for his work with the Bowls Club and the Cherry Tree Angling Club.
Richard Brinded became Suffolk EBF Area A 4-wood singles champion.
Roger Bullen's Lowestoft Mens EBA League A team finished as runners-up to Halesworth, but Halesworth beat Bungay in the QuarterFinals of the County League Play-offs.
Derek Hinsley, Roger Bullen and Richard Brinded reached the Quarter Finals of the Suffolk EBA County Triples.

2005
Bungay reached two quarter-finals of the Suffolk EBA County Cup competitions. In the Quinton Bowl they had a walkover against Dephi, then Roundwood (Away) but lost to Cornard (at Eye) in the Quarter-finals. In the Bert Edwards Cup they beat 2004 winners Framlingham (H), Melton (A) before losing to Norbridge (at Roundwood) by just 4 shots.
Bungay A, captained by Peter Nunn, won promotion to Division One of the Beccles League by finishing runners-up in Division 2.
Derek Hinsley and Roger Bullen reached the Suffolk EBA Lowestoft Area Pairs final, but lost to the eventual County winners.
Peter Gunstone lost to Jimmy Summons (Kessingland) in the Suffolk EBF Area A final of the Champion of Champions Singles.

2006
Roger Bullen reaches Champion of Champions EBF Area A semi-finals losing to Wrentham's Richard Utting 21-15.
Roger Bullen and Derek Hinsley reach EBA Lowestoft Area A finals again.
Members at the AGM votes to apply for membership of the Women's EBA for the 2007 season, but subsequent investigations mean that the Club will try again for the 2008 season.

2007
Richard Allen reached the Mens EBF Area A Champion of Champions semi-finals.
Ann Swanston reached the Ladies EBF Area A Champion of Champions semi-finals.
The Club team captained by Roger Bullen reached the last eight of the Suffolk EBA Bert Edwards Cup. They lost to Felixstowe in the quarter-finals.
Ian Gosling's Benacre League team won the Second Division title by just a single point from Blundeston.
Peter Nunn's Beccles A team were relegated from the First Division. 

2008
Bungay host the Suffolk EBF Area A Semi-finals and Finals.
James Gosling and Jack Powley win the Area A Under-25s Open Pairs, but lose in the County semi-finals at Sole Bay.
Ann Swanston is the runner-up in the Ladies EBF Area A Champion of Champions.
Despite being relegated from Division One Ian Gosling's Benacre League team lose to Kessingland A 95-67 in the Easey Cup Final at Wrentham.
