Season's News
Bungay beat Woodbridge by 31 shots in the
first round of the Suffolk
(Bowls England) Norton Cup.
Bungay beat Halesworth at Halesworth in the 1st Round of the
Suffolk EBF Area A Senior Cup, but lost to Wrentham in
the Semi-finals at Bungay.
Roger Bullen, Derek Hinsley
and David Sheppard lost in the County Quarter-finals of the Suffolk (Bowls England) Triples Competition.
Two Bungay members were involved in the Suffolk EBF Area A finals at Thurlton over the same weekend. In the under 25’s singles
James Gosling lost in the semi-finals 21-12 to Darren Mann of Halesworth. James
teamed up with Jack Powley in the Open under-25’s
Pairs and beat Georgina Marwood and Craig Parfett in the semi-finals, before losing to Craddock and
Allen in the Final.
Bungay lost to Kensington
Gardens in the
semi-finals of the Custom Kitchens Cup.
In the Suffolk
(Bowls England) Millennium Trophy Bungay hosted the highly fancied
Ipswich-based club Marlborough with the result to be decided by the first team
to win three of the five rinks. Bungay’s Richard Allen put one on the board for
Bungay as he convincingly won his two-wood singles. After a marathon 24 ends
and a brave fight back by Bungay Captain Roger Bullen,
Marlborough
level the match by wining the four wood singles 21-20. Despite dropping a five
on the 14th of 18 ends the three wood triples of Dominic Belisario,
Derek Hinsley and David Sheppard held on to win by
nine shots, before Marlborough again levelled the
matched by winning the pairs against Reg Brinded and Jack Newnham. All
eyes were now on the Fours rink as Peter Rix, Richard
Tuthill, David Feavyour and
Jim Reid came under increasing pressure to keep their lead due to excellent
bowling by the opposition to a short length jack. Just three shot’s up overall
and one down on the end Richard Tuthill, playing at
number three, rolled the jack and his wood into the ditch to lay two shots
which were not disturbed for the rest of the end. With the final wood of the
last end the Marlborough
skip moved the jack back to gain a four, which was just one short of forcing an
extra end. Bungay therefore go through to their first County semi-final this
century where they will meet Halesworth or West Row at Felixstowe
on Saturday 12th September.
Bungay Bowls Club competitive season
came to an end last Saturday as they bowed out of the Suffolk (Bowls England) Millennium Trophy.
With a home draw advantage in the previous three rounds seeing off Brantham, Sudbury and the
much fancied Marlborough, Bungay travelled to Felixstowe and Suffolk green where they faced local rival Halesworth, who
had beaten Haverhill,
Norbridge, Felixstowe &
Suffolk and West Row on their way to the semi-finals. Halesworth were indeed
looking for their second County
Cup title after winning
the Quinton Bowl.
In the two-wood singles Halesworth’s England under-25 squad member and Suffolk U25
champion Ian Catchpole beat Bungay’s Richard Allen 17-12, while their County
Singles runner-up Ollie Whyte beat Bungay Captain
Roger Bullen 21-12. In the third of five rinks to
complete Dominic Belisario, Derek Hinsley and David
Sheppard upheld Bungay honour by beating Jamie Rous,
Roger Denny and Ryan Willoughby 22-11, but this was followed just a few minutes
later by the defeat of Reg Brinded
and Colin Powley by Halesworth’s
Alistair Cook and John Catchpole by 27 shots to 16 to clinch the game for
Halesworth. The Fours game did complete and Halesworth’s
Paul Newson, Jon Jordan, Denis Taylor and Daniel
Bishop beat Jack Newnham, Richard Tuthill,
Eric Trudgill and Jim Reid by 22 shots to 14.
In the other semi-final the 2007
winners Ipswich Bowls Club beat Ipswich & District Bowls Club by the same
4-1 margin.
Despite beating Ipswich Bowls club
in the semi-final of Quinton Bowl, Halesworth could not repeat the form and
lost on four of the five rinks with only their Fours rink winning, as Ipswich
Bowls Club took the title for the second time.
