Description:

Gyrinus are insects which include the whirligig beetle. The long larva is seen here from above. Its long ovoid head bears jaws, suggesting a predatory life style. The first three segments of the body bear well developed legs whilst the remaining 9 or 10 segments bear fleshy elogated cone-like projections. Within the body, you can follow the tracery of breathing tubes branching off from two main lines running the length of the body.
