DORSET CLOCK SOCIETY PROGRAMME

2008

155th Meeting, Saturday 19th April, St Georges Church Hall, Fordington, Dorchester , DT1 1LB,  7 for 7.30pm.  Members are welcome to bring guests.

Martin Gatto,  ‘Tavern Clocks’.

Martin began collecting tavern clocks over 30 years ago and has started a Tavern Clock website Tavernicus.co.uk with Collectors Forum, Gallery, Archives, Restoration, Directory of Artists and For Sale sections.  He is devoting much of his time to building a record of Tavern Clocks which he hopes will become a national Archive.  I am sure that this will be a very interesting evening as I don’t think we have had a talk on these clocks before.

156th Meeting, Saturday 24th May, Winfrith Newburgh Village Hall , DT2 8JN , 7 for 7.30pm.  Members are welcome to bring guests and we may have the company of some of the village residents.  NOTE THIS CHANGE OF VENUE.

Chris McKay,  Horological Postcards.

Chris needs no introduction other than to say that his interest in horology started in his childhood and has been developing ever since. He is a professional member of the BHI and is on their Board of Directors. He is passionately interested in the life of Lord Grimthorpe and has done much research on the subject.  His talk and picture presentation is extremely interesting and entertaining and, having seen it, I recommend it to you all.

157th Meeting, Saturday 9th August, Annual Summer Barbeque, The Mill House, Owermoigne, DT2 8HZ near Dorchester . Members are welcome to bring guests.

We really are very appreciative of the kind invitation of Derek, Mary and Richard Whatmoor and their family to Mill House for our annual barbeque.  This is always a super event, whatever the weather, with delicious eats consumed beside the lake and followed by the most generous offer of free entry to A Dorset Collection of Clocks.  I discussed with Derek that, rather than having ‘work in progress’, he should speak about new acquisitions to the museum and small parties could be taken for a conducted tour of it by Derek and Richard.  Your comments please.

158th Meeting, Saturday 6th September, St Georges Church Hall, Fordington near Dorchester DT1 1LB, 7 for 7.30.  Members are welcome to bring guests.

Roy Rice, The Bilbie Family of Chew Stoke, Somerset --Bellfounders and Clockmakers.

Roy last spoke to us about fifteen years ago. He is the co-author of a book about the Bilbie family and comes from Banwell where he is a local historian with an interest in 18th and 19th century Manual Fire Engines.  The first half of his talk will be about bellfounding and after the coffee break he will continue talking about clocks.  I am hoping that I will be able to get him to say something about the fire engines!

159th Meeting,  Saturday 4th October, St Georges Church Hall, Fordington near Dorchester .  7 for 7.30pm.  Members are welcome to bring guests.

Douglas Bateman, ‘A Precision Pendulum Clock’.

In 1971 Doug made himself a regulator using the newly developed Light Emitting Diodes to give a “free” pendulum with amplitude control. The timekeeping is good, and several articles in HJ followed. Other work led to the investigation of the fundamentals of timekeeping. Eventually, Doug became one of the several main contributors to the revision of the book ‘The Science of Clocks and Watches’, published as the 3rd Edition by the BHI. More recently he diversified into sundials, and in his retirement is currently the Secretary of the British Sundial Society. Professionally, he worked in government research laboratories.

160th Meeting, Saturday 8th November, St Georges Church Hall, Fordington near Dorchester .  7 for 7.30pm. Members are welcome to bring guests.

The Third Reverend Richard Grosvenor Bartelot Memorial Lecture.

Mike Bundock, ‘Floral Clocks’.

Mike last spoke to us in November 2005.  Tonight’s talk should appeal to horologists and horticulturists alike.  He is a graduate member of the BHI and Chairman of the Turret Clock Group of the AHS. He is also a Diocesan clocks adviser, author and co-author of several books and articles.

161st Meeting, 13th December, Christmas Celebration.

A provisional booking has been made at the Conservative Club but is open for discussion so can be altered if members so desire.
