Biographical Details: DS9 is preparing for a possible infiltration by Dominion changelings. Sisko receives a request from General Martok who is asking for permission for his warriors to take shore leave on DS9. Sisko agrees and is surprised when an entire Klingon task force uncloaks. Tensions grow as Klingons mingle with station inhabitants. General Martok meets with Sisko and Kira and advises them that he has been sent by Gowron and the High Council to "fight along side" the Federation in their battle against the Dominion. Sisko replies by telling General Martok that the Federation has things well under control. Martok is not pleased by this and lets Sisko know that the Klingons will be ready for the Dominion when they come, anyway. Meanwhile, on the Promenade, there is trouble brewing. A group of young Klingons has beaten Garak to a pulp after an altercation in Quarks Bar that was stopped by Constable Odo. Sisko receives a distress call from the freighter Xhosa, Captained by Kasidy Yates, and Sisko and Kira proceed with the Defiant to find the Xhosa which is being held in a tractor beam by a Klingon Bird-of-Prey. When the Captain of the Bird-of-Prey does not comply with Sisko's demand that he stand down, Sisko fires a warning shot across his bow. The Bird-of-Prey breaks off it's attack. Later that day, General Martok storms into Sisko's office and slams a Klingon dagger on his desk and leaves. Dax tells Sisko that the dagger was probably from the Captain of the Bird-of-Prey who has probably paid with his life for disobeying orders. Sisko is very concerned about the escalating problems on DS9 and puts in a call to Star Fleet. His call is answered when several days later Worf arrives at DS9 to assist with the Klingon presence. He quickly dispatches the young Klingon ring leader who turns out to be General Martok's son. This brings Martok to Worf's quarters where Worf confronts him and demands to know why Martok's forces are really at DS9. Martok tells Worf that his mission will determine the fate of the Klingon Empire. Worf meets with a family friend in his quarters and finds out that the Klingons intend to invade Cardassia. Gowron feels that the changes that have occurred on Cardassia have been orchestrated by the Dominion and wants to make sure that the Dominion are purged from the Alpha Quadrant. Worf advises Sisko of this news and Sisko receives orders from Star Fleet that DS9 is not to get involved. He finds a way to let the Cardassians know of the impending attack anyway. The invasion goes on as planned but Cardassia is ready for it and the Klingons respond to the Federations condemnation by withdrawing from the Khitomer accords. When Worf refuses to leave Star Fleet and join the Klingon battle group, Gowron strips him of his good name, and the House of Mogh. Worf says that he still has his honor. Later, Sisko is called to assist Gul Dukat in transporting the Detepa Council and they are under attack by Klingon warships. They manage to get the Council aboard the Defiant and race back to DS9, followed by several Klingon warships including General Martok's. Martok contacts Sisko and demands he turn over the Detepa Council to him. He insists that they are changelings and when Sisko informs him that all tests show that the members are not changelings, Chancellor Gowron steps forward and tells Sisko he intends to take them anyway. A battle ensues as the Klingon warships approach DS9 and several Klingon raiding parties transport to the station and are repelled. Federation forces arrive and Gowron is forced to stand down. Star Fleet decides to send a team to Klingon territory to infiltrate the High Council and determine if the Klingon Empire has been compromised by a changeling posing as Gowron. It is decided that Captain Sisko, accompanied by Worf, Odo (who no longer is a changeling), and Chief O'Brien will go under cover as Klingons who are going to the Klingon fortress of Ty'Gokor for the Order of the Bat'leth. In order to effect their cover, Sisko contacts Gul Dukat who has in his possession, a Klingon Bird-of-Prey which will be used to transport them to the heavily guarded Klingon outpost. Their mission is to expose the changeling Gowron to the Klingon Empire, no small task. Gowron will be presiding over the induction of new members to the Order of the Bat'leth in a few days. It is resolved that the four Star Fleet officers will infiltrate the ceremony and plant a device which will render the changeling incapable of maintaining his solid form. It is thought that this will stop the war between the Klingons and Cardassia and restore order to the Alpha Quadrant. Worf is charged with whipping the "new Klingons" into shape. He has to make them able to act as Klingon warriors would act in the a ceremony of this nature. He has his job cut out for him. They must be ready by the time they arrive at Ty'Gokor. The Bird-of-Prey arrives at Ty'Gokor and deposits the party of "warriors" who go about mingling with the other warriors in the ceremonial chamber of the Hall of Warriors. They set about drinking blood wine and melting into the throng of warriors. They will set their devices the next day just before the ceremony begins. The next day the little troop sets about putting up their emitters. A commotion arises and General Martok arrives to greet the warriors. He begins his rounds and comes to O'Brien. He thinks that O'Brien's face is familiar but O'Brien manages to talk his way out of it, for the time being. After several close calls, the troop sees Gowron arrive to begin the ceremony. Sisko goes up to receive his honor and before he can melt back into the crowd and set the emitters on, he is accosted by Martok who has recognized him. The chamber is sealed and the troop is jailed. While in their cell, Sisko tries to talk with Martok and advises him that the Federation has reason to believe that Gowron has been replaced by a Changeling spy. Martok admits that he has had his suspicions for several months now. Martok suggests that Worf could challenge Gowron to honorable combat. He agrees and the troop is brought to the ceremonial chamber. While Worf is battling with Gowron, Odo talks with Martok. Martok does not understand why Sisko doesn't just kill Gowron and why Gowron didn't just have his guards kill Worf. Odo is suspicious and tells Martok that it is for Klingon honor, an idea that he should be familiar with. Worf has been fighting Gowron well and makes his move to take him out when Odo yells that Gowron is not the Changeling, Martok is! Martok attacks Odo and Sisko kills him with his disruptor. The troop is thanked by Gowron who is dubious about being able to stop the Klingon war effort now that his warriors have had a taste of battle. Sisko, Worf, Odo and O'Brien are returned to DS9. A mysterious message is received by DS9 and it is being sent from the Gamma Quadrant. It appears to be an obscure Cardassian code and Sisko sends for Garak to see if he can decipher it. He listens with interest and then tells Sisko that the code is a planetary survey from 5 years ago and that it doesn't mean anything. Later, Garak is surprised when he tries to steal a run-a-bout and finds Dr. Bashir waiting for him. Bashir takes him to Sisko's office and Garak explains that the message was just one word, "Alive", being played over and over again and that it was a code set up by he and Enabrin Tain. Garak tells Sisko that it means that Enabrin Tain and possibly others from the Alpha Quadrant are still alive and need help. Sisko agrees that it bears investigation and sends Garak, accompanied by Worf to investigate and report back to DS9. Meanwhile, on DS9, Gul Dukat has arrived to make repairs on his stolen Klingon Bird-of-Prey. He has also come to claim his daughter and take her back to Cardassia. Unknown to him, Ziyal has begun a budding romance with Garak who is Dukats enemy. Dukat is furious and gives Ziyal an ultimatum. She advises her father that she will remain on DS9 and he tells her that he no longer has a daughter. Ziyal tells Major Kira that she will wait for Garak's return because he promised that he would indeed return. Tensions are high on the station when a broken message is received from Worf and Garak warning them of a Dominion build-up near the worm hole. Sisko decides that the worm hole must be sealed for the protection of the Alpha Quadrant. Kira understands that the Emissary would not have made this decision if there had been any other way. Shortly after sending the message, Worf and Garak are taken prisoner by the Jem'Hadar and brought to Internment Camp 371, a former mining colony on an asteroid which has been converted to a prison. Upon arrival they find a Klingon in heated battle with a Jem'Hadar soldier and discover that it is the real General Martok. Martok does not recognize Worf because he has been a prisoner for several years while his Changeling counterpart was wreaking havoc in the Klingon Empire. Ikat'ika, the Jem'Hadar leader tells Worf that he is pleased that there is a new Klingon available for his "training session." Worf and Garak are taken to their cell where they find Enabrin Tain dying. He is disappointed in Garak because he came alone and was captured. It is then that Garak lets us know that Tain is his father, not just his mentor. Tain dies after making Garak promise to escape. The other captives are Romulan, Breen and one surprise more, Dr. Bashir who had been captive for about a month since his last science meeting. General Martok tells the new captives of the communications relay that Tain had been working on and Worf suggests that Garak continue working on it to get them out of the prison. Back on DS9, Sisko gives the order to destroy the worm hole. O'Brien executes the command only to find that the emitter array has been sabotaged. The worm hole opens and a fleet of Dominion ships begins pouring out. Sisko barks out, "Battle Stations!" The massive fleet pouring out of the worm hole has just changed course and headed for Cardassian space. Gul Dukat breaks from the Federation Fleet and joins the receding Dominion fleet. He sends a message to Sisko that he has been secretly conducting negotiations with the Dominion for their support. He is on his way to claim Cardassia and drive back the Klingon invaders. Sisko and Kira are speechless and furious. Sisko wants to know who sabotaged the emitter array and Kira vows to kill Dukat on sight. Dr. Bashir (the changeling) suggests that the station undergo testing to see if there is a Changeling infiltrator. Sisko agrees. Back on Internment Camp 371, Worf is brought to the fighting arena and paraded in front of the Jem'Hadar soldiers as a worthy opponent for their training. Martok tells Worf of the rules of engagement and the fighting begins. Work dispatches several opponents and is taken back to the cell shared by the other captives. Beaten and bruised but not defeated he is treated by Dr. Bashir while General Martok extols his warrior virtues. Garak is behind the wall panel in the compartment with the life support equipment trying to convert them from the subspace transmitter made by Tain to a transmitter that will activate the run-a-bouts' transporters. He suffers from claustrophobia but knows that his work means the difference between life and death for he and his fellow prisoners, not to mention the Federation and Alpha Quadrant. Talk about pressure! The prisoners are summoned and Garak must extricate himself from the compartment. The prisoners are assembled near the fighting arena and the Cardassians among them are told by Deyos (representative from the Dominion) that they are free to go because of the new treaty between the Dominion and the Cardassian Empires. Garak is unsure what to do, but before he can do anything, he is told that he will remain with the prisoners because Gul Dukat considers him a traitor to Cardassia. The prisoners know now that they must escape. The prisoners are returned to their cell and Garak continues to effect the changes to the transmitter so they can make their escape. On DS9, Sisko dismisses an offer by Gul Dukat to "save the Federation." Dukat tells Sisko that they will take Terok Nor by force if necessary. Sisko invites him to try. The Federation Fleet arrives and Sisko orders all vessels, including run-a-bouts, to join the upcoming battle. One run-a-bout crew has been killed and replaced by the Changeling Bashir. He heads for the Bajoran Sun. Sisko determines that the readings they are getting of the Cardassian/Dominion Fleet are somehow wrong. He sends Major Kira on the Defiant to intercept the run-a-bout that is heading for the sun when he discovers that the Dr. Bashir that has been on board is not who he seems to be. The run-a-bout is intercepted, tractored away from the Bajoran Sun and destroyed when the antimatter bomb it was carrying explodes. Meanwhile, Garak has succumbed to his claustrophobia and lies almost comatose on a cot. Martok and Work return to the cell after several more battles are won by Worf. Martok tells the others of the glorious songs they will sing of Worf's victories. Garak gets up and tells the others that he would like to be in the songs but not as the Cardassian who panicked. He continues with his work. The Jem'Hadar guards come back for Worf and Martok and take them back to the arena. Ikat'ika tells them that he will now show his soldiers how to defeat this Klingon and proceeds to engage Worf in mortal combat. He is unable to defeat Worf and Martok, seeing Worf is badly injured, tells Worf that his honor is intact, stop fighting. Worf rises up and tells the watchers assembled that he will never surrender. Ikat'ika says he will no longer fight the noble warrior. He cannot defeat him and killing him no longer interests him. Deyos orders them killed just as the transporter effect captures Worf and Martok and they find themselves back on the run-a-bout and heading back to DS9. After the former prisoners return to DS9, Gowron and Sisko agree to renew the Khitomer Accords. Gowron says he will do this only if there is a permanent contingent of Klingon warriors on the station. Sisko agrees but only if he gets to pick the commander of the regiment. Gowron agrees and Sisko picks General Martok. With Gowrons agreement, Martok tells Sisko that he accepts and he is honored. General Martok has been given command of the Klingon Bird-of-Prey Rotarran. He has been ordered by the Klingon High Council to take the Rotarran and her Klingon crew to the border of Cardassian space to search for the Klingon battle cruiser B'Moth which is missing in action in the area. Martok requests that Worf be his first officer and Worf agrees. Dax also comes along as the ships science officer. The Rotarran's crew is a group of disheartened Klingons who have not won a battle for quite a while and feel they are a crew without honor on a jinxed ship. Worf tries to build the crews self-esteem by reminding them that they are warriors. Dax intermingles with the crew and tries her best to instill the spark they have lost. Neither is doing very well. When a Dominion patrol ship crosses their path, General Martok orders the crew to keep the Rotarran cloaked and to do nothing to bring attention upon the Bird-of-Prey. The crew feel that he would rather avoid trouble with the Dominion because of his two year internment with the Jem'Hadar. He reminds them that the High Councils orders were to find their fellow ship and not to engage the Dominion. The crew obeys his orders, grudgingly. Worf tries to bring the mounting ill-will to General Martok's attention, but Martok reminds him that he is his first officer and needs to trust in Martok's orders. Martok is torn by his orders from the High Council, his Klingon heritage which calls for honor to be served in battle, and his memory of the treatment he received at the hands of the Jem'Hadar. He is not going to risk this crew by putting them into a situation he feels is potentially disastrous. Things come to a head when they find the B'Moth and it is floating, lifeless just on the other side of the Cardassian border. Martok chooses to remain on the side of caution and orders the Rotarran to remain on the Federation side. The crew is furious and Worf challenges Martok for command. A battle of honor ensues and Martok wins when he uses his Klingon dagger and stabs Worf. The blood/battle lust has come to the fore and Martok orders the Rotarran over the border to rescue the remaining crew of the B'Moth. Later, on DS9, General Martok thanks Worf for reminding him of his duty and his responsibility for his crew and their honor. He notes that Worf is still wearing the symbol for the House of Mogh and remarks that the house has been disbanded. He tells Worf that he would be honored to call him brother and asks him to join the House of Martok. Worf is genuinely pleased and tells General Martok that he would be honored to be a member of the House of Martok.
