Wooden Drascombe
Name: Cuilin
Type: Lugger
Builder: Michael Tuck, Tasmania
Year: 2007
Owner: Michael Tuck

Quote from Michael Tuck:-
"I am still in the process of building. At this stage I am about
95% done, maybe even a bit better. Still have to buy the trailer. A few
customised features:
1.Watertight hatch covers in forward and after bulkheads.
2.Watertight bulkheads fitted fore & aft under side benches. Removeable
inspection ports also fitted here.
3.A boom included in the spar inventory. As a consequence, there is
also a downhaul to tighten up the luff and a boom vang coming from the
mast step.
4. Diaphragm type bilge pump mounted on the centre case which discharges
into the centre case.
5.Gaff and boom jaws are both in cast & polished bronze.
6.Centre plate and rudder assembly are both in Stainless steel. Surprisingly,
this wasn't that much more expensive than going with the galvanised mild
steel option.
7.The main mast is hollow, with internal halyards.
8.I have decided to have a go with a spinnaker! To this end, a double
ended halyard is mounted above the fore-stay masthead fitting and a topping
lift for the pole is also fitted. Turning blocks are fitted either side
of the mizzen mast on the gunwale and lead to a pair of horn cleats on
the after deck. The pole is carried on the boom.
9.The cockpit coaming is eliptical rather than the straight lines/square
corners as shown in the drawings.
10. There are a pair of trap-door bailers fitted in the deepest part
of the bilge.
11. I have devised a rather neat centre plate lifting and locking
device which I copied from 100+ year old whale boats.
Colour scheme is Shamrock Green for the hull, internally she is painted
an "off" white, with varnished trim of Huon Pine and local She-oak. All
the spars are varnished Oregon. Sails are tan except for the spinnaker
which is orange, white & green.
The intended sailing grounds are Pirate's Bay which I overlook and
the Derwent River estuary and also any waters between them. I intend to
get her bum wet this summer!!"
Later quote from Michael Tuck:- "I finally got CUILIN launched
last January (2007). We actually put her in the water on the day of the
opening of the Wooden Boat Festival. She certainly drew a lot of admiring
glances from the crowds there."
