Wooden Drascombe
Name: 'Kathleen'
Type: One-off based on a Lugger
Builder: John Elliott
Year: 1980
Owner: Peter Vigors-Evans
Quote
from Peter:-
"A special version of a cruising Drascombe Lugger built by John
Elliott of Yealmpton in 1980, from epoxy glued marine ply with hardwood
trim, rubbing strakes and Sampson posts. The hull has more freeboard than
a standard Lugger, a ballasted keel and winched centre plate. The gaff
rigged mainsail and large mizzen are both set on booms and have reefing
points. There is a roller reefing staysail and a furling foresail set
on a bowsprit. The cabin has two cushioned berths, a galley and a chart
table."
Another quote from Peter:- "A special version of a Drascombe Lugger,
built by John Elliott as a bare lugger hull, with an addtional plank to
give more freeboard. This was at the request of the original owner, a
Mr Smith, Antiques dealer from Penge, London. He wanted this because he
wanted to build a cabin with more headroom and wanted protection from
the wash of the bigger boats on the Thames."
