"We bought her 4 years ago from a retired sailing instructer who had used her for many years in Poole harbour. She had no official name although he referred to her as 'The Old Maid'. She was in a rather neglected state and we have tried to spruce her up a little. . " Quote from Doug Elliott:- "From the photos you've provided, I can confirm positively that 'Lompster' is the same boat we built for Lord and Lady Strathspey, I think she was built in late1979 if my memory serve me correctly and remains much the same as she was, a few minor alterations and repairs obviously, different tiller, but definitely the same boat. The Wooden Open Drascombe Longboats are a real rarity. John Watkinson built the original at Drascombe Barton and we only ever built 3, so yours is number 4 in the 'family lineage' the last one we built and was the only varnished example we built, it's so nice to see she is kept varnished albeit a little battle scarred, still a very beautiful boat" Another quote from Doug Elliott:- "I have just spoken to Lady Strathspey, now 95 years of age, who was, with her husband Lord Strathspey the original owner. Sadly her husband passed away in 1995. I can now confirn the boats original name was 'Whelk' and have passed this on to Dominic who is the 3rd owner, the previous owner being a sailing instructor in the Poole area who bought the boat from the Strathspeys. Lady Strathspey was delighted to hear of the boat which she said they loved and had many happy times sailing." .Photos |
