Welsh Dragons American Football

The Wales Dragons have been in existence since early 1997. Over previous years many people talked about the possible forming of such a team. This dream of many took form with the help, determination and hard work of Mr. Albert Lambert.

Albert decided it was about time with the Irish team already set up that he would take it upon himself to form a Welsh National American Football Team. In that same year the Scottish National Team was also formed. After various meetings a schedule was devised and a hope to later have an English team and make this into a Four Nations Championship.

With little help from the outset Albert took charge and asked for coaches who wished to help start the team, and so the first head coach was Tony Athersmith (Loughborough University) and various other assistant coaches. The first few training sessions were more of a light workout to assess the players and teams potential. From these players the first game was to be against Ireland played at a home stadium in Crosskeys Rugby Club.

On the day of the game there was great support from the local crowd numbering upwards of 100. On the day this great show of support was appreciated by the players and coaches but unfortunately the Dragons lost their inaugural game. Later in the year the Dragons traveled up to Edinburgh to face the Scottish team. Once again there was a great show of support for both sides and although scoring the first touchdown of the day on a pass from Matt Slimming to Steve Gordon early in the 1st quarter they were unable to hold off the stronger Scots.

Undetered by the loses the team still looked forward to another season ahead and all players and coaching staff encouraging people they knew who were eligible to play for their Country. A change in the coaching staff signalled a more simplified yet dominant defense with the promotion of Phil Demonte from Line/Special Teams to Defensive Coach. Additions to the team overall made the side a team to be wary of for the following campaign.

Due to various circumstances the first home game against Scotland was played on a very wet, cold and muddy pitch at Pontcanna playing fields, supplied by Cardiff University. The pitch had to be hurriedly marked out by players and management which delayed the game. Once started the Dragons were ready for another great ame against Scotland. The Scottish ground game was effectively held for the majority of the game but unfortunately the Welsh side was susceptible to the long and accurate passing from Scotland who ran out winners.
