The North Highlands Coast to Coast walk - details - Day 1
The walk start at NH 656688 in the town of Alness, the most convenient drop off point by car. If you are backpacking, you want to stock up with provisions in Alness, where there is a good range of supermarkets and other shops. Start by walking south, following the River Averon to where it enters the Cromarty Firth and walk out onto Alness Point. In true C2C tradition, dip your boots in the salt waters of the Cromarty Firth. Turn around and now follow the River Averon north again. At the A9 road bridge, cross to the East bank of the river, this gives a nicer path to walk on, rather than the road. When you reach Alness High street, cross once more to the west bank of the river. You now follow the river as close as possible for the next 14 or so miles. The further upstream you go, the less paths there are directly alongside the river, so it is necessary to walk some short sections on quiet roads, and the latter sections through a forest. Your goal is the end of the public road at the end of Strath Rusdale NH 568780 a convenient point to pick you up at the end of your first day. Backpackers will want to walk on a bit further into the open land beyond Strath Rusdale and look for a wild camping spot. |
