Town Corner

More information about Herby and his family is still coming in. This page will be updated to include newly discovered material.

This page takes its name from Dixons Hill Road junction with Dellsome Lane. This junction was once known as 'Town Corner' from the shop at the location that was run by one of Herby's sisters.

For a year, during 1910, this sister looked after Thomas Reginald Town, her (and Herby's) nephew and son of Walter and his wife Sarah Louisa Holroyd Town, nee Pinder. Thomas was enroled into the Boys' School for that short period.

Weaste Station
I am grateful to Mr Terry McCarthy for the following information about Weaste Station.

The station was already out of use before the Second World War, by which time it had become a bit of a playground for local boys. Its buildings were of wooden construction and the lads could gain access and move around between the walls.

The photograph below was taken after demolition of the station but before work had started on the M602. Weaste Road passes over the bridge and the station entrance was on the bridge.

Henry Richard Town
Herby's father died of a stroke which he suffered at Post Office Corner, Welham Green, on 29th April 1927. He was 84 year old.

Ernest Harry Town
At the time of his father's death in April 1927, Ernest (Herby's younger brother) was living at 10 Mount Ararat Road, Richmond.
