If you've never experienced the Alps in Summer, either in or out of your car, then you ought to try sometime.

Never mind that being in the Alps is nowdays regarded as somewhat 'passe', particularly during the summer months. What I would say is, don't knock it until you've tried it.The accessability to places, either on wheels or in boots, is incomparable to the winter and you would hardly recognise some of the locations.

I acknowledge that skiing can give you an adrenelin rush, but believe me some of the motoring routes and footpaths are truly stimulating, exciting, and occasionally awesome.

But enough of my generalities. What I'm attempting to achieve is to lure you into taking your personal transport onto the Continent.

Oh I know you've been there before but have you really ventured into an area where you'll be able to stretch both your own and your cars abilities.

Whilst on the way try the often clear and unrestricted Autobahns.

Take a trip around the 'Nurburgring'. It is sometimes open to the general public, providing 21 kms. of motoring heaven, and you don't have to be in a sports car.

Stop off in Stuttgart and slake your thirst for motoring history by visiting both the Mercedes-Benz and Porsche museums.

And after that get yourself south into Western Austria and the Mountains.

The 1st map below shows the specific area of Austria that I know fairly well and for which some data can be supplied :-

 Map of Western Austria

-:whilst the 'general map' shows the location of 8 resorts in that area which could be used as centres for both motoring and hiking tours. (Serfaus, Fiss & Lardis are regarded as one resort, don't ask why)

One benefit that arises from staying in the region is its close proximity to Germany, Italy, Switzerland and Lichtenstein.

However the intention of this Webpage is to provide assistance to genuine D.I.Y. holidaymakers who wish to spend time in the Tyrol or the Vorarlberg. (N.B. I have no involvement with any Travel Company,Resort or any other holiday related organisation. I'm just an enthusiast.)

I've accumulated information on Ferries, Routes to the area (although for those of you not travelling from the U.K. this may vary),Maps, Insurances, Resorts, Accomodation, etc., etc., plus directions on how to get to the Porsche, M-B, and B.M.W. museums.

A couple of examples of suggested routes are shown below. One is for a motoring tour, the other for a mountain hike. Described routes are indicated by a line marked with crosses.

 Driving Tour

Drive Description:-

Head south into Italy driving thru' Reschen, Mals and Schluderns. This gives you an opportunity to investigate the Monastry at Burgeis and / or Schloss Churburg in Schluderns and / or medieval Glurns, if you haven't already done so.

South of Schluderns, at Spondinig , the road No. changes to No. 38 and you continue on this, bypassing Laas and Schlanders,(not to be confused with Schluderns back along the road). In about 5 kms a turning to the right leads into the Martelltal valley (Val Martello) and on to the Enzian Hutte. However as the road is a cul - de - sac and about 20 kms. long you may decide to leave the trip for a later day.

Back on road No. 38 continue to head towards Meran (Merano) and 9 kms. after passing Latsch and prior to Naturns, a sharp turn to the left will take you into the Schnalstal valley (Val di Senales), signposted Karthaus. Continue on to Vernagt and after passing the Vernagt Stausee (lake) on your left, you'll finish at Kurzras where you can take the Seilbahn (cablecar) up to the Grawand restaurant at 3250 mtrs. for superb views over the whole region. As the Seilbahn whisks you up approx 1300 mtrs in 6 minutes don't be surprised if you feel a headache coming on. Another thing to remember is to take a sweater or anorak with you as it can be quite chilly at the top.

Return to NAUDERS is the reverse of the outward route .

 Hiking Tour

Hike Description :-

Drive thru' the border post into Italy and just as you're coming into the village of Reschen turn right following signs to Rojen. The road is quite narrow, twisting and steep so proceed with caution. Continue driving up until a sign directs you right to the Reschener Alm.

It's possible to park the car at this junction but should you decide to drive on to the Alm be prepared that you may have to reverse at some stage as the road is extremely narrow.

At the Alm take path # 5 going upwards and after approx 0,5 km. you'll hit a junction in the path. Bear left aiming for Piz Lad. The initial section of this path is relatively easy but gets progressively harder the higher you go, the last section being a knee buckling zig - zag. Nearing the top you'll come to another junction but this time you turn right towards the summit, with its Gipfelkreutz (peakcross) at 2 808 mtrs.

The views north across to NAUDERS and steeply down into the Engadine valley to the west, more than justify the effort.

To return it's possible to walk southwards just below the crest of the mountain and in about 1 km. you'll connect up again with path # 5. This is of course an alternative route to the top. Follow this path down until once again you find yourself back at the Reschener Alm.

Generally speaking nearly all described routes can be covered in a single day but then that's for you to decide.

So where to from here ? Well if you think you could do with some help on certain aspects of your holiday planning then feel free to make contact and we'll see what we can do. Remember the D.I.Y. planning alone is entertaining and at the end of it you get what you want, not what 'they' want to sell.

No timewasters, or professionals etc., please.
