My Comments

Congratulations to Cambridgeshire and a personal thanks to the all the fencers for coming and the many commitee members from Norfolk, Suffolk and Cambridgeshire for their help in organising and getting the Teams to Essex once again. Hopefully all the fencers had a good day and will want to come back again next year

It was a pity that Hertfordshire dropped out right at the last minute- it would have been great to have representatives from all the strong fencing Counties in the region and to give everybody a full day's fencing

The Read Cup was held this year at a new Venue any feedback on the location ?

I am sorry I could n't be there to see the bouts but thanks for the Birthday card

As for Essex it was disappointing that we couldn't get a full team out - If we had I am sure we could have got the missing points to have retained the cup.

Congratulations must go to the reinforcements who stepped in at the last minute. - Little Cecily who was Fencing for Essex for the first time, managed to get more points for Essex than MUM and Lyndon with a Sabre added to our points tally.

But well done everybody - Hopefully all the efforts of the Essex Fencing Commitee were worthwhile and everyone was pleased with the outcome.

The Read Cup

The Read Cup is an inter-county team event organised and run by Essex County Fencing Union. The event is open to all counties that form the Eastern Region of British Fencing at this was the third year of the event. The Cup being named after the former County Chairman and his wife, Chas and Pat Read and the winner of the event is the county that amasses the greatest number of victories at all weapons. 

As the scores started to roll in it was clear there would be three contenders for the first place, Norfolk, Cambridgeshire and Essex. In the epee the Essex men managed a 9 – 0 victory over Norfolk, while the women in the same weapon won 6 – 3. However against Cambridge, Essex were to crash with a defeat for the men of 7 – 2 but the women notched up a 6 – 3 victory. Norfolk continued to struggle losing to Cambridge 8 – 1 for the men and 6 – 3 for the women.

In the Men’s Foil Essex showed what they were capable of, by beating Cambridge 6 – 3, Norfolk 9 – 0 and Suffolk by a similar score, unfortunately the women were to reverse this trend by reversing these scores. 

Once all of the scores were collated there was only one victory separating the first and second place and last year’s champions Essex had to settle for second place with only a team of 13 instead of the full team of 15 fencers and eight of the Essex team had only dropped one bout all day

 The medallists were, 1^st Cambridge 93 victories, 2^nd Essex (last years winners) 92 victories and 3^rd Norfolk 67 victories
