Congratulations
Essex Foil Team Champions
Cyrano A ,
Well done Richard , Marco and Andy
Thanks everyone for turning out again for the last event of another season . The very welcome inclusion of the Cyrano contingent added a bit more spice to the competition and certainly made for a really good days fencing,.With Anne not bringing in the really big guns ( not that the team selected could be called little guns ) it made the top teams more evenly matched and gave the competition some quite close matches
Just one note

Final Cyrano A Versus
Chelmsford A
The day ended with a really good final that was certainly close
and certainly had the audience on the edge of their seats , with
every point scored being greeted with load cheers.
First Richard Kurzyca gave Cyrano a 5 point lead
,but Richard Simms fought back and took twelve points from
Richard to put Chelmsford two points up at 24-22
However , by the time it got to the final two fencers -Richard
Simms and Andy Eames the score had reversed to 40- 38 in favour
of Cyrano and despite Richard staging a valiant fightback -Andy
managed to reach the magical 45 with Chelmsford still on 41

How they got there
Whilst three poules were straight forward and went with the seeding . The No 1 poule showed how tight the days fencing was going to be with the seeding putting CADS, Highams Park A , Chelmsford B , Cyrano C, and in a poule of "death ".
The first bouts put CADS against Cyrano and H P against Chelmford both matches took well over an hour and went right to the wire with Cyrano just winning 45-41 and Highams Park winning 45-40 and it really showed that last year's champions were unlikley to have it all their own way this year.
We also had the only defeat of the day for Cyrano by a non Cyrano team when Madelaine, Joe and Anita only just lost to Chelmsford A 45-43 .- the last fight was Richard Simms versus Madelaine and although Madelaine had been given 4 point lead by Anita she could not stop Richard getting to 45 first
Also credit to the youngsters ( Abbie, Jacky and Robert ) the Brentwood School team - Although they didn't win in their poule they certainly had My team worried at one stage ( Ken certainly won't forget Abbie when she was winning 9-5 and they all took three points off Peter Brackin - No mean feat that )
The poule round ended with
100% - Cyrano A, Chelmsford A, Cyrano C and Newham A
66% - CADS
50 % Newham B , Cyrano B, Wickford A
33% Highams Park A
0% Highams Park B, Wickford B, Chelmsford B and Brentwood School
The Poule round we had two Teams with exactly the same % and indicators ( Newham and Cyrano )
This meant that one of the most crucial moment of the day came when Newham won the toss and were made No 1

Unfortuneately, Because of the toss up, for Team Cyrano that
mean't that all their three teams ended up in the same half of
the DE and basically, they kept knocking each other out .We had
Cyrano C first knocked out by their B team in the last eight and
then the B team being knocked out by the A team in the Semi Final.
In the other half another close fight saw Newham narrowly defeated by Chelmsford A in the semi Final 45 -42

Plate
The plate this year was on a DE with all teams ranked out of
the top eight in the main competition going straight into the
Plate
There was an an excellent standard of fencing with even the
Chelmsford team that included Don Cook and Essex Captain Matt
Sellick not even reaching the final being knocked out by Highams
Park
Well done Highams Park the eventual winners after Wickford B took them very close (at one stage Wickford were 6 points up) Special mention to James Bashford (14) of Wickford in his first senior competition and helping his team to a final and from what I saw holding his own in the final against some seroius fencing from the Highams Park team .
