Regional and County Leagues

The Region committee has been anxious to encourage inter-club and inter-county matches to enable the social fencers within the clubs to have the opportunity to fence against opponents they have not fenced before or have only fenced occasionally.

It is therefore hoped to get a regional league system up and running from January the 1st. If your club is interested in competing in a league or as a county you already run a league, would you please send me, David Sach (address on last page) the relevant details of your club or county league. I will be willing to assist in getting county leagues up and running.
It is hoped that matches could be organised within a county league with the first two in the county progressing to the regional finals, which would be held on one day towards the beginning of the summer. This would include all the finalists from all the counties who would then fence off.

Ideally matches within the county leagues would take place on a home and away basis. It is hoped to get the leagues up and running in as many weapons as possible, and that eventually senior and junior leagues will be set up in all weapons. The senior league will be for fencers over 16 and the junior league for fencers under 16. If counties are unable to organise a county league but have another team competition then in the first year the top 2 in that competition can be nominated for the regional finals.
It is hoped that this initiative will succeed, so please reply even if you are only a one weapon club, there will be separate leagues for each weapon so do not worry about your league position being affected if you have an amazing foil team but no sabreuers, it will not affect the placing of your foil team.

As has been stated elsewhere in this newsletter the Region has a cup for the Champion Club. The basis for deciding the Region’s top club will be on points awarded for entries and results in all the region’s competitions. The competition will be open to all clubs in the Region which are affiliated to British Fencing.

All entries in an individual competition (senior and junior) will be gain 1 point. All team entries in the team championship will gain 3 points (as long as all fencers are in the same club). Points will also be awarded for positions 1st - 10, 2nd - 8, 3rd= - 6, 4th (team competition only) - 5, 5th & 6th - 3, 7th & 8th -1. These points are per team in the team event not per fencer.

To reflect the different standard in the competitions the points for places are subject to a multiplier as follows, Senior Individuals - x5, Team events - x6, Intermediate foil - x3, U18 Youth - x2, U16 Youth - x1.5, U14 and U12 Youth - x1.

This competition will start from this season’s Youth championships and end after the team event. Fencers will only be allowed to fence and gain points for one club in a season. If a fencer finishes in the top 8 and is unattached, fences for an unaffiliated club or a club outside the region no points will be awarded for that place.

This competition will be somewhat of an experiment this season and the points systems may be changed in future to reflect the experience gained. It is however hoped that it will encourage clubs to urge their fencers to enter the Regional competitions, both to gain from the experience and help their club towards being the Champion Club. I
