Fencing Glasgow World Cup
Last weekend saw the Glasgow World Cup competition, one of a series of competition throughout the world awarding points towards world ranking. The event, staged over two days, was held at the Gorbals Leisure Centre which itself had only been open for five weeks. Just over thirty nations were represented from as far afield as the USA, Australia and China, as well as mainland Europe.
Best UK result of the first day
was that from Simon Laight of the Colchester
club CADS who qualified straight through to Sunday (the last 64)
without the need to compete in the direct elimination rounds on
Saturday. In doing this he had beaten fencers from, Australia,
Spain, UK, USA and Belgium and being defeated by the Estonian
Meelis Loit 5 3.
From the direct elimination only two other British fencers were to make it through to Sunday to join Laight, Tom Cadman, who put out former Colchester fencer Quentin Berriman and Dudley Tredger who dispatched one of the French squad in 47 seconds! Both of these fencers are from the London club London Thames.
Sunday saw all of the British fencers exit the event in the last sixty-four. Best placed was Simon Laight who finished 43rd. The event ended for Simon when he was drawn against Gang Zhao of China. Zhao made early gains in their bout thus making Simon play catch up for most of the match. The final score being 15 9. Laights National Ranking prior to the event was 8th and following this event it is provisionally 4th.
His coach Lyndon N Taylor BAF accompanied him throughout the event. Gang Zhao went on through the competition to the semi-finals where was to finish 3rd. Tom Cadman and Dudley Tredger finished 58th and 59th respectfully.
