Essex County Team Epee Championships

Last weekend saw the County's Epee Team Championships and as is now becoming the norm, there was a strong turnout from the County's clubs.

After the initial poule rounds there were four teams with 100% victories, The Colchester Club CADS, Chelmsford "A", Wickford "A" and University of Essex "A", with the two Colchester teams earning a bye from the first direct elimination round.

After the first of these direct elimination rounds Chelmsford C had been eliminated by their B team and in similar fashion Wickford "A" put out their "C" team. The closest match at this point in the proceedings was between Brentwood Old Boys and Wickford "B". This match saw one team put ahead, only to see the other take their place, Wickford being the victor with a score of 45 - 44.

In the following round the seeded teams joined the elimination rounds. The University of Essex "A " team started well amassing a ten hit lead however as the match against Estuary progressed this lead was whittled away eventually seeing Estuary through to the next round with a score of 45 - 31. The other seeded team CADS replicated the same score 45 - 31 but in a very different fashion. CADS continually held the lead and gradually pulled away from their opposition, Chelmsford "B". In the same round Wickford "A" beat Southend 45 - 33 and Chelmsford "A" beat Wickford "B" 45 - 20.

The semi-finals saw the "A" teams of Estuary and Chelmsford against each other, and CADS against Wickford "A". Chelmsford made steady work of defeating their opponents winning 45 - 30. CADS on the other hand were out for blood. At one point in the match CADS were 30 - 13 up and continued to dominate the match with a final score of 45 - 23.

The final was then set for a re-match of the Team Foil with friends and rivals Chelmsford v CADS. The Colchester club continued where it left off with the two Simons, Laight and Thompson and Sandra Dawson working well as a team. Once again they build up a large margin between themselves and Chelmsford thus going into the last bout of the match 40 - 31 ahead. This gap was two great for Matt Sellick to bridge and CADS were again the County Team Epee Champions by a final score of 45 - 33.
