The Start of a New Season
To the fencers of Essex
We now start the 2001/2 fencing season, I along with my fellow County Committee members, wish everyone a successful and enjoyable season.
The first of the County Championships will soon be on us and I feel sure you will all support these events in the fantastic way that you have in the past. Please note there has been some re-arrangement in the order of events this year. These adjustments have been made to try and fit in with the fencing calendar and to balance the numbers attending events.
The next edition of Point in Lines is currently being prepared now so if you have anything please let me have it now. When your club receives the next edition of the newsletter you should note an improvement in the quality of printing as over the summer I have up-graded my printer (and computer).
Last season the Essex fencers were called upon to represent their County at least twice and for which the County was grateful for their support. If you want to make yourselves available for team selection you must let us know, giving your details and those all important contact numbers. Also it is useful know if you can attend at short notice. Please direct your notification to the Team Captain Matt Sellick or to myself who will gladly pass them on to Matt.
The Essex Open started the season, this event saw a very strong entry both in quality (for example all bar 2 of the top 20 Men's Foil attended, this included the top 10) and in numbers, Men's Epee started with 143 entrants. I would like to express my thanks to Rodney Francis for his efficient and speedy work behind the computer at this event, to finish when we did with that size of entry is no mean achivement, thamks Rodney.
Alan Jones (County Rep') and myself attended a meeting of the Region at the weekend, here we were able to put questions and make comments to the President of BFA Keith Smith. This was a very useful opportunity to demonstrate what the county has done and some of the problems we encounter. It is indeed refreshing to find a President that is prepared to come and visit the provences and appreciates fencing is alive and functioning outside London. Thank you Keith for sparing the time.
So it looks like it is going to be a busy season, all the very best for 2001/2,
Lyndon N Taylor
Chairman Essex County Fencing Union
