Court Cave The name comes from the Baron
courts that were held here in the middle ages. The cave is very dangerous,
especially the two underground passages which have had a series of collapses. The
passage at the back of the cave is said to go all the way inland to Kennoway and MacDuff
escaped through this when being chased by Macbeth. Pillars have been installed at
the entrance but they did not stop a collapse in 1970 almost blocking the opening.
It is also called the Piper's Cave since a piper entered playing his pipes and was never
seen again. You may hear him still wandering about inside playing in the hope of
being rescued. There are several markings in the cave, one of the God Thor dating
from around 800 A.D. There are also numerous cup marks, rods and disks similar to
those seen on standing stones. Other Pictish symbols include a bird, a man and some
"elephant" like carvings. |
