Jonathan's Cave

This cave is about 18 metres long and has two entrances.  It is the most spectacularly marked cave of all with more carvings than all the others put together.   The name comes from a nailmaker who lived in the cave in the 18th century.   Other names include the Cat Cave and Factor's Cave.  There is a ship on the East wall, the oldest known picture of a ship in Scotland.  The other markings are on the West wall.  The best is shown opposite, the horse or bull marking which is computer enhanced in the lower picture.  There are also impressive fish, birds, tridents, disks and rods, a "dagger" and crosses.  The dates of these markings vary from Pictish and Viking through early Christian to medieval and more modern.
