Wemyss Castle This castle lies on the cliffs
between West and East Wemyss. It was built in 1421 by Sir John Wemyss to replace an
earlier one at Kilconquhar which was destroyed by the Duke of Rothesay in 1402.
Wemyss castle was restored in the 1950's. One of the towers from an earlier
building has been re-used, first as a windmill and later as a doocot. There is an
egg-shaped dungeon within the castle, connected to the building by a 30m zigzag
passage. It was at Wemyss Castle in 1565 that Mary, Queen of Scots first met Lord
Darnley. More recent royal visitors have included the Queen and the castle is still
in use as a residence today. |
