This is a personal reminiscence of my favourite Spectrum games ever written. The 20 are in no particular order, but represent many constructive/wasted hours in the mid 80s.

Title: 3D Deathchase

Comments: A great game in which you had to chase two motorcyclists through a forest, while avoiding crashing into trees.

Title: BC Bill

Comments: Simple but addictive game in which you had to provide food for your wife and children. Food and women were collected by hitting them over the head with a club.

Title: Harrier Attack

Comments: Flying game with the objective of bombing ships and houses while avoiding other planes and the ground. An 'eject' option was included for no particular reason.

Title: Hyper Sports

Comments: Perhaps the best example of the sports game which ruined many spectrum keyboards.

Title: Manic Miner

Comments: The true classic game which was incredibly difficult and annoying.

Title: Valhalla

Comments: Very early spectrum adventure game, which had good graphics, but little plot. Your character is punished if you type in a swear word.

Title: Horace Goes Skiing

Comments: Third game of the 'Horace' trilogy and by far the best. Simple concept, collect skis and then manoeuvre Horace down the slopes.

Title: Jet Pac

Comments: Addictive game in which your character must assemble a space shuttle. Fast and enjoyable to play.

Title: JetMan

Comments: The Jet Pac Character reappears in this far harder game in which it is impossible to survive more than a few seconds.

Title: Atic Atac

Comments: Ultimate's best game. Run round a large maze collecting objects before your 'turkey' health runs out.

Title: Chuckie Egg

Comments: Very fast platform game in which you must collect eggs without touching the strange 'emu'-like creatures.

Title: Zzoom

Comments: Enjoyable shoot-em-up in which most enjoyment was achieved by killing the men you were meant to be saving.

Title: Wheelie

Comments: Annoyingly addictive game in which you must ride your motorbike on platforms whilst avoiding ice, hedgehogs, and the 'ghost rider'.

Title: Trap Door

Comments: Puzzle solving game with excellent graphics.

Title: TransAm

Comments: Another classic game from Ultimate in which you ride around the USA searching for gold cups.

Title: Rampage

Comments: Very enjoyable version of this famous game. More playable than the versions that appeared on other formats.

Title: Jet Set Willy

Comments: Sequel to Manic Miner, but unfortunately far too difficult (I never got near to finishing it) with annoying music and many bugs. Great game nevertheless.

Title: Booty

Comments: This game was probably Firebird's best. Great example of a platform game which required some thought.

Title: Where Time Stood Still

Comments: Relatively recent game which was available on the 128 only. Enjoyable 3D puzzle solving game.

Title: Skool Daze

Comments: Very entertaining game in which you controlled Eric around a school, going to lessons, avoiding getting lines, writing on the blackboard, avoiding mumps etc.

There are many more which were also great games....

Hobbit, Wriggler, Android 2, Sabre Wulf, R-Type, Star Quake, New Zealand Story, Jailbreak, Way of the Exploding Fist, Tanx, Alchemist, Mikie, Robocop, Renegade 2

...but you must draw the line somewhere.
