WALK No. 9

Looking West from above Dancing Ledge.

Coming from the direction of Wareham go right through Corfe Castle to the end of the village then turn right off the main road (S.P.Langton Matravers). When you reach Kingston turn left, and in about 1 mile turn right for Worth Matravers. As you enter the village see carpark on your right. Start the walk by turning right from the park, and go right through the village, heading out in a westerly direction.

At Weston Farm turn left (S.P.St Aldhems Head) , then at the next signpost turn right. In a short distance turn left , southwards, on to a narrow stony lane, which takes you all the way to St. Aldhems Head, and the Norman Chapel. This is in a good state of repair, and is normally kept open. It certainly was, with fresh flowers on the font, when I passed by at 7.30 one morning.

To continue the walk you turn left, eastwards, now being on the Coastal Path. However its worth going in the other direction for about 1/4 mile to a rough hewn memorial to one David. From here you look across to Houndstout Cliff (flat top), and then Swyre Head (set back from the coast), and further stretches of the coast. Back to the walk, and it is easy to follow to the next point of interest after about 1 1/2 miles, at Winspit. You come out on to a lane, which to your left goes back to Worth. But turn right and very soon left again to go up steep flight of steps. Winspit is one of a number of disused quarries which used to despatch their output by sea., transferring to larger ships at Swanage.

Continue eastward until you come to a marker for Seacombe. Here you go over the stile, then turn right along grassy stretch to next stile. Here you go inland a short way, then go right down steep path with some steps. Right turn at the bottom then left to go up the next slope. Carry on until you reach the lower end of a substantial stone wall running inland. Here there are two stiles on the right and N.T. sign for Dancing Ledge. Go down here- a rough stony path- to find a secluded corner . Ideal for a picnic. However it is not always so quiet as it is a very popular spot for school children to practice abseiling !

From here you leave the coast and head inland up the grassy slope toward the dense copse further up the hill. Go in the direction of the arrow given for Langton on the end of the stone wall. When you get nearer the copse you will see stile posts ahead. Go past these and continue uphill. When you come out into the open at the top continue northwards along track by the right hand side of the field. Then join gravel road (Priests Way) where you turn left. Continue along this road until you pass some elegant stone farm buildings on your left. The Way degenerates to a grassy track for a few yards where you go through a wooden gate and head straight across the field to the next gate. Turn left to come out on to main road which takes you back into Worth. Go past the pub, then immediately right to reach the carpark after a short distance.
