Poskitt Name History

The English name Poskitt is a variant form fo the name Postgate, along with Posgate, Posktkitt, Poskett, etc., and like the variants is derived from the place in the North Riding of Yorkshire called Postgate in medieval times, thus revealing the locative origin of the name, althought the place name itself has long since become extinct. The place name was derived from the Old English words "Post(e)", and "gate", meaning "a road marked by posts".

Among the early written references ot the name or a variant we read of one Thomas Postgate in the Cartularium Abbathiae de Whiteby, from Yorkshire in the year 1349. Richard Poskett appears in the register of the Guild of the Corpus Christi in the City of York for the year of 1514, and William Posgate is listed in Yorkshire Wills for 1648, along with Thomas Poskitt for the year 1661.
