Club History

May 2004

The Club was started in 1997 by Joe and Maggie Forber and Graham Williams.

With just 2 Cadet Boys teams at the beginning, Manchester Magic is now believed to be the largest National League Club in England. This progress was greatly helped by the acquisition of Trafford Basketball Centre in Sale which gave the Club its own 2-court venue on a school site. It soon became evident that TBC was not big or modern enough to fulfil the ambitions of the Club so a great deal of time and energy was spent in finding and developing a new site for a major Basketball Centre.

The Club was fortunate to find excellent partners in Whalley Range 11 - 18 High School and Manchester City Council and were able to develop the Amaechi Basketball Centre on the grounds of Whalley Range High School, which opened in June 2002.

We now have a modern 3-court Basketball Hall with sprung wooden floor which we hope will enable us to further develop top-class basketball players and also to run extensive programmes for the community.

The Magic now have 6 full-time staff, with every prospect of growing further and needing more top-quality basketball personnel in the future.

4 November 2003

Great Honour for the Amaechi Basketball Centre.

5-Star Award

The Club have been awarded the coveted 5 Star Award from England Basketball. We are the only Club in the UK to have this honour bestowed upon us.

The 5 Star Award is only awarded to Clubs who demonstrate the whole range of activities connected with the development of boys and girls basketball players:

All age ranges are catered for.
All abilities are welcomed.
Community activities involve playing, coaching, refereeing and table officiating developments.
The National League programme shows Club teams operating at the youngest level (Under 14 Girls) to the oldest level (Magic 1 and Mystics 1).
