Charlotte and Kelsey
It was appropriate that Kelsey Bardsley and Charlotte Stoddart have been chosen for the GB ladies Under 20 team to go to Macedonia this month to play in the European Championships. The girls have been mainstays of our Mystics programme for many years and have worked terrifically hard to achieve this honour. In addition, both families have given great time and support to our Club over many years, for which we are most grateful.
Best of luck to both girls in the Championships and in the continuation of their basketball careers - both go to USA Colleges in August 2009.

Rehana, Georgia and Verity
These three girls are currently in training with the World University Games squad, at the Sugden Centre in Manchester. A team will shortly be selected to go to Belgrade from 1 July to 12 July to play in the games. We wish all three the best of luck in their efforts to make the team. Georgia is currently at Oral Roberts in the USA, Verity had been at Idaho State in the USA for 2 years and is now changing College. Rehana played professionally in Spain last year and hopes to return there for this coming season.

Rosie and Leah picked
Great news for Rosie Hynes and Leah McDerment who have both been selected to represent England Under 16 Girls in the European Championships in Estonia from 30 July to 9 August. Both girls have done tremendously well and are a credit to the Club, on and off the floor. Leah, at 13 years of age is one of the youngest players ever to represent England.

Rosie and Leah take another step up the England ladder
Following the last development camp, Rosie Hynes and Leah McDerment have been selected to join Karen Burtons Under 16 Squad.
Whilst this is still early days, and now the hard work really begins, both girls are thrilled and are looking forward to their first camp in December.

England/Great Britain Competition
The European age group competitions go on throughout the summer and all age groups involve some of our young Magic/Mystics players.
Great Britain Under 20 Women |
|---|
| The team results were poor but Emma Macready did very well to make the final cut and was able to make a contribution in some games. Verity Peets who has just finished her first year at Idaho State University, saw more action with 7 points and 4 rebounds per game and, despite her recent knee surgery, had a good tournament. The team was coached by Sergio Lara Bercial. For more details see www.fibaeurope.com |
England Under 18 Men |
|---|
| Again, team results were disappointing but we had excellent contributions from Josh Houghton (7 points per game) and Jamie Glen (6 points per game). Conor Gent was used much less by the coach, but his time will surely come. Josh is a 1991 player, so is still available in the same age group next season. For more details see www.fibaeurope.com |
Great Britain Senior Women |
|---|
| The team is now in a 6 week Camp in Cardiff and has a deep programme of training and games, before going into the Europeans later in August. Georgia Jones and Joanna Clayden represent the Mystics. You can follow their progress on www.basketballgb.com |

England Under 18 Men in Cherbourg
CHERBOURG TOURNAMENT REPORT - (25/03/2008)
The following report is from Bob Chappell the team manager -
"Cancellation of the ferry crossing due to impending bad weather 24 hours before the England U18 team were due to depart for the annual international tournament in Cherbourg did not detract from their performance. In fact, the change in travel arrangements helped build team spirit as players changed their travel plans from France, Germany, the Canary Islands, the US and England, to arrive 12 hours earlier. The earlier arrival enabled the team to train three times in preparation for their group games versus Tunisia, Cherbourg and Romania. Head coach, Andre Alleyne, was able to conduct excellent coaching sessions to cater for most eventualities. These sessions brought immediate dividends as England beat the athletic Tunisia 81-61 with Jack Stannard and Bradley Wilkinson top scoring with 18 points each.
Cherbourg, the host club, provided a spirited early encounter, but eventually succumbed to the fast breaking England team - this was reflected in Andrew Lawrence, a guard, being the top scorer with 18 points. A tough encounter was expected from Romania, but they were beaten comfortably to ensure that England won their pool, and played Holland, the second placed team from Pool B in the semi-final. In a tight game in which Bradley Wilkinson excelled again, England won, reaching the final for the first time.
The final against Portugal was a close and tense encounter. Portugal raced to an early 13-4 lead, but a time-out by Andre Alleyne change the ‘mind-set’ of the players, who battled back to lead 34-25 at half time. Crucial 3 point shots from Josh Houghton and Jack Stannard, rebounds from Jeff Durkin, and tenacious defence from Andrew Wallace ensured a 67-58 win by England, much to the delight of the travelling England supporters. The second half belonged to Jamie Glen whose points and rebounds performed with an unconventional but effective style resulted in him being awarded the game’s MVP."
