A brief history of the surname Diviani

The surname Diviani first appears in the parish records of St. Atanasio, Calpiogna, Ticino, in the 1660's. Calpiogna and its daughter parish of St Margherita, Campello are in the Leventina Valley on the south side of the St Gotthard Tunnel. The Commune of Campello holds earlier records dating to the 15C showing entries for the name of D'Ivano.

Ticino is the most southern Canton in Switzerland bordering Italy. Its religion is mainly Catholic and the first language is Italian, although French and German are spoken too.
Campello and Calpiogna are mountain villages perched on the mountainside of the Leventina Valley. Historically the residents have migrated into northern Italy then to France and England in order to work for a living. In the early 1800's they would have worked as chestnut men selling roast chestnuts gathered from the hillsides around the villages. Latterly they became restaurateurs with premises in Lyons and Paris, France and also in London, England.

The Brentini Connection

Throughout the years for which the records exist there has always been intermarriage with members of the Brenini family. So much so it is impossible to trace back any Diviani individual without coming across at least one Brentini ancestor or vice versa.

Research

Diviani One-Name Study and Brentini Family History.
Research is ongoing to record all baptisms, marriages and burial entries for all Divianis and Brentinis worldwide. An extensive database has been built up with fresh information being added daily. Additional information gathered from personal or official sources is also held.
Where are we now?
There are still Diviani and Brentini family members living in the villages of Campello and Calpiogna. However we have migrated abroad and there are members of the families, or their descendants, living in USA, Argentina, Australia, New Zealand, Sweden and United Kingdom as well as Switzerland.

2003

2003 will be the bi-centenary of Ticino joining the Swiss Confederation and plans are being made for a family gathering to be held in Campello. Any person with a link, past or present, to the Diviani family is invited to attend the gathering on 1 August 2003 (Swiss National Day) to meet with cousins and to learn more about the history and the culture of their particular family. Details of the gathering and the itinerary will be released a little nearer the time. Please contact me if you hope to attend or would like more information.
