Westend can now concentrate on the league after going out of the League Cup

WESTEND UNITED 1

MIDDLEWICH 6

(Mid Cheshire League Cup. Under 12’s)

Middlewich started this previously postponed League Cup match. Westend won the ball in midfield and then played some excellent football with great passes, tackles and headers performed. Westend were pressing forward for the best part of the first twenty-five minutes. The action included a kick out by Robin Evans that was volleyed forward from midfield to Ashley Goodwin who went down the wing and put a superb cross in to Darren Roberts who put the ball just over from six yards. Middlewich won a corner that was cleared by Jim Cowburn, who along with Alex Mason and Philip Roney worked tirelessly in defence, but possession was lost in midfield, the ball was returned over the defence and their forward then lobbed it over Robin Evans for the first goal. Westend went forward from the kick off and forced a corner that was cleared. Westend were then back under pressure and Philip Roney saved on the line and put the ball out for a corner. Middlewich took the corner and a well-hit ball came in for their player to head home to make it 0-2. Moments later it was 0-3 after some good forward play. Westend kicked off and the ball was pushed forward to Sam Marshall who received it and scored bringing Westend back into the game. At Half time the score was 1-3. Before the game restarted all the players took a position on the centre circle and held a minute’s silence in remembrance. Westend started the second half which developed into a midfield battle with Kit Ambage, Jack Carroll, Joseph Brazier and Anthony Crossley having to deal with some high balls coming in. When they did receive the ball they tried their best to distribute to the wide players, Oliver Gifford and Harry Higate who in turn tried to get the ball to the forwards of Darren Roberts, Dean Morgan, Sam Marshall or Scott Sapsford, when they were on. Fifteen minutes into the half Middlewich got another goal to make it 1-4. This really knocked the wind out of Westends sails and Middlewich started to take control when, to add to Westends problems, they were awarded a penalty after one of their players was bundled to the ground in the area. It was a well taken penalty but Matt Blood, who had come on at half time, did manage to get a hand to it but could not quite keep it out, 1-5. Five minutes later and just before full time Middlewich scored again to make the final score 1-6.

The man of the match was Harry Higate for his midfield and defensive performance.
