WESTEND UNITED 1
SUTTON 1
(Mid Cheshire League Div 3 Under 12’s)
Westends return game against Sutton was at home on a thawing pitch and compared to the teams’ first encounter there was a vast improvement with the honours even at the end of the game.
Sutton started the game and both teams took it in turn to apply the pressure. After fifteen minutes Westend were in the lead after some great battling by Sam Marshall on the edge of the box he managed to get the ball to Oliver Gifford who squeezed the ball neatly between the keeper and the post. Sutton were awarded a freekick outside the area and the shot that came in was just wide of Robin Evans post and just out of reach of a stretching player. Sutton came forward again and a good cross was well saved by Robin Evans. Harry Higate and Oliver Gifford played some delightful football linking well and pushing the ball forward so that Dean Morgan could make a good forward break and force a very brave save from the keeper. Westend got a corner, taken by Darren Roberts, the ball came out to Scott Sapsford but his shot went wide. Moments later after some good work by Nick Tabbinor and Jack Carroll on the left Jim Cowburn had a great shot that came back off the post. At half time the score was 1-0 to Westend.
Westend started the second half but had to defend as Sutton came forward. Robin Evans was called upon to make a couple of saves when under pressure. Westend came forward again and Alex Mason had a good effort from distance saved. Sutton got a freekick and the ball came in hit the post and bounced across goal only to be cleared by Philip Roney. Sutton kept coming forward and they had another shot go wide. Westend were awarded a freekick just outside the box that came in but it was handled to give a freekick to Sutton. Sutton came close when the ball came into the Westend box only for the shot to be sliced wide. It was Westends turn to have a good spell with Jim Cowburn Linking well with Jack Carroll and his shot was intercepted for a corner. Kit Ambage and Anthony Crossley worked hard in midfield and got some crucial tackles in. Dean Morgan had another shot saved followed shortly after by a shot from Ashley Goodwin. Sutton went on the attack again and after a series of throwins the ball came to one of their forwards who hit a very good shot that could not be stopped to bring the scores level. Westend tried to get the advantage back but no matter how hard both teams tried no more goals were scored. This very even match came to an end at 1-1 and both teams came away with a well deserved point.
