Westend United make it to quarters in Tournament at Northwich

The Saturday of the 25th of May saw a 7 a side tournament held at Moss Farm. The event was for ages under 8’s through to under 17’s and was run as mini leagues through quarter and semi-finals to a final.

Westend United entered two teams in the under 12’s age group these teams were Westend United A and Westend United B.

The first game in the league was between local rivals Vale B and Macclesfield Saints A and Vale won this 1-0. Westend United A’s first game was against Tarporley B and this ended a 0-0 draw. Their second game was against Vale B and a very good game of football ensued with both sides having chances the closest of which came from Alex Mason who hit the post, it ended in creditable scoreless draw. The next game was between Saints and Tarporley, which also finished as a 0-0 draw. Westend A’s third game was after Vale had beaten Tarporley 1-0 giving them top spot and it meant that the Westend lads only needed a point to go on to the next stage. Their last game was against Saints and it looked like the point was going to be achieved until Philip Roney put a superb ball over the defence allowing Alex Mason to win it and thump it past the keeper to put them solidly in second place and into the quarter finals. The draw took place and Westend were against Tarporley who were the side that put them out of the Frodsham tournament. This turned out to be an exciting game with chances at both ends but after some lovely footwork to bring the ball all the way from defence to score Tarporley were through to the semi’s.

Westend United A: - Ambage (Midfield / Defence), Evans (Keeper), Gifford (Midfield), Higate (Midfield), Mason (Striker), Roney (Defence) and Tabbinor (Defence).

Westend United B played Northwich Town A in their first game, having watched Egerton A & Davenham B fight out a goalless draw and a Scott Sapsford headed goal from a Darren Roberts corner kick in a crowded goalmouth gave the lads an excellent start. Sapsford was the smallest lad on the pitch but he managed to get to the cross to score with an excellent glancing header. In the next round of matches the lads played Davenham and were very unlucky not to hold out but a goal 2 minutes from time gave Davenham a deserved 1-0 win. Going into the last round of matches the lads had to win to go through and although Westend B were the better footballing team Egerton held on for a 0-0 scoreline which sent them through.
Westend United B: - Blood (Keeper), Brazier (Midfield), Carroll (Defence), Roberts (Defence / Midfield), Crossley (Midfield), Morgan (Midfield) and Sapsford (Striker).

Every one of the lads played great football and showed good spirit throughout.

Thanks again go to all the parents who gave their time and enthusiastic support to the players on both teams.
