Welcome to the
Old Cheltonian Lodge web-site.
The Lodge was consecrated on 7th May 1907, and in 1909, with Westminster, Charterhouse, Sherborne and Clifton Lodges, we founded The Public School Lodges’ Council. The Council now comprises the representatives of 33 Lodges.
The Lodge is established
specially for the association and convenience of Old Cheltonians, that is to say
of Brethren who are members of the Cheltonian Society, together with those who
are closely associated with College.
The Lodge meets three times a
year in London and, with the Headmaster’s permission, twice a year at College.
The Lodge has been pleased to support College charities and appeals, and, in
1991, when the Public School Lodges’ Festival happily coincided with the 150th
anniversary of College, we were delighted to support the College Appeal.
As might be expected from a school with a strong military tradition, numerous members of the armed services have been members of the Lodge, including Lieutenant General Sir Philip Neame, VC, KBE, CB, DSO, and Major General Sir Leslie Nicholls, who was Worshipful Master when the Public School Lodges’ Festival was held at College in 1965. Other distinguished members have included Headmasters and Masters of College. A Founder of the Lodge and its first secretary was W.Bro C.C.W.Troughton, and, when he died, a Memorial Appeal was launched to commemorate his great services to the Lodge and to the Public School Lodges’ Council, which owed their inception to him, and on 23rd November 1913 a memorial was dedicated in the ante-chapel at College “which pays a debt of honour to one of he most loyal and devoted of Old Cheltonians who ever lived”. The stained glass memorial, illustrated below , consists of the Coats-of-Arms of Westminster, Charterhouse, Cheltenham, Sherborne, Wellington and Marlborough.
